We hosted our priest for dinner a couple weeks back, and he mentioned that he liked a particular sports team. That sports team will be in our town in a couple months and I was wondering if it would be inappropriate to invite the priest to join us at the game. Thoughts?

Nah go for it. My family golfs with a priest all the time. I’m sure that he’d really appreciate it.

That’s a wonderful idea! Priests are people too, and I’m sure he’d love it!

I remember seeing a priest at a Tampa Bay baseball game a few years back. He had a custom made jersey that said “Father Tom” on it!

Thanks all for giving me confidence. I just asked the priest and he was overjoyed to get the invitation!

Cardinal Basil Hume was a lifelong fan of Newcastle United, even though he lived most of his life in Yorkshire and was archbishop in London. His contemporary George Carey, archbishop of Canterbury, was a fan of Arsenal, as was Jonathan Sacks, chief rabbi of Great Britain and the Commonwealth. I’m fairly certain that Cardinal Hume and Dr Carey were once spotted at the same match on opposite sides of the stadium. Dr Carey and Lord Sacks have definitely been to Arsenal together. John Paul II was, of course, a great fan of Cracovia, although I don’t suppose he got to go to as many matches as he would have liked! So, if you’d like to take a priest to a game, I think there is very good precedent for it.

One time I was sure I saw my parish priest having dinner at a sports pub and watching the game. He was by himself. Maybe it was someone that looked like him and I didn’t get a clear look nor did I approach him but it sure looked like him.

No not at all. Our priest likes cricket and I know parishioners who have taken him to the cricket for a day out.
I see you did ask him, I hope you have a lovely time

I’ve taken my priest to MLB games. He’s a cub fan living in STL, so it’s tricky but doable. 😉

Why would it be inappropriate? Priests like going to sporting events with friends.

I don’t see that that would be an issue. A priest friend of ours who has now gone to his reward was a huge Toronto Blue Jays fan. We didn’t live anywhere near Toronto, but he eventually moved there after he retired (it was where he had grown up and there was a residence for retired priests in his order there). I’m sure that if he had had the opportunity he would have loved to attend. One year, my parents gave our priests tickets to a symphony concert as a Christmas present. The concert was titled “Celebrate Faith” and it consisted of Mendelssohn’s oratorio “Elijah”. (An oratorio is an unstaged dramatic work for choir, soloists, and orchestra; Handel’s “Messiah” is an example.)

My parents’ diocese has, or at least used to have, a hockey team comprised of priests. They’re called the Fearless Fathers, and the former bishop was their coach. They played an annual hockey game against alumni from the local NHL team.

Hi

I was at the game! Arsenal 2-0 Newcastle United FA Cup final 1998

It was a great season for my team Arsenal

Not inappropriate at all. Priests are people too. And yes, many are sports fans.
