Cardinal Basil Hume was a lifelong fan of Newcastle United, even though he lived most of his life in Yorkshire and was archbishop in London. His contemporary George Carey, archbishop of Canterbury, was a fan of Arsenal, as was Jonathan Sacks, chief rabbi of Great Britain and the Commonwealth. I’m fairly certain that Cardinal Hume and Dr Carey were once spotted at the same match on opposite sides of the stadium. Dr Carey and Lord Sacks have definitely been to Arsenal together. John Paul II was, of course, a great fan of Cracovia, although I don’t suppose he got to go to as many matches as he would have liked! So, if you’d like to take a priest to a game, I think there is very good precedent for it.
