“Those who do not fight – and there are many examples in Europe – have lost,” Kaczyński told Sieci . As one such example, he pointed to Ireland, which was once, like Poland, a bastion of Catholicism but has now become a “Catholic wilderness with rampant LGBT ideology”.

“I will not let us be defeated by…this threat to the very foundations of our civilisation”

I don’t think that it’s a case of fighting. It’s a case of defending. It was the people of Ireland who fought to have changes to, for example, the abortion laws and ssm. The church was attempting to defend and maintain it’s influence.

Speaking as an Irish person, in my experience the church did very little defending and basically rolled over. The Church in Ireland has still not found its voice and is virtually silent. We are beginning to see the start of a push for euthanasia here now, I wonder will we hear anything at all from them.

Personally I think they lost their voice with all the scandals and never found it again. I think we need new younger bishops who weren’t involved with those scandals to take up the cause of Catholicism again.

It is probably better for the Church to stay out of politics.

In my opinion, what Ireland is missing is a proper Conservative and Christian political movement that takes Christian discussion points and fights them out in the public space. The liberal side is well organized and well funded and the conservative side has nothing to answer back with on the same level.

I guess the situation in Ireland is similar to that in Italy.

In Italy the bishops say what there is to say, but when they say it, social networks react by attacking, especially the numerous progressive Catholics.

Moreover, when the Church takes a stand, it is not that this is the first news of the evening news, not even the second, nor the last: it is news that must be searched on the net, social networks and some agencies.

So it may be that the Irish Church has intervened several times, but the media have not picked up the news.

Normally I’d agree with you but they also have a duty to educate their flock. Most of those who voted for Same Sex Marriage and Abortion would class themselves as “Catholic” but think there is nothing wrong in voting for these issues. Another matter is that the government tend to couch these referenda in soft fluffy language that makes them sound innocuous and they are never called out on it.

In Ireland it’s the reverse if the church spoke on anything it would be all over the news (to be attacked). However there was also silence from the pulpit.

Seems to me that the Church was used to being a respected and dominant institution and couldn’t pivot fast enough its new status of being seen as a rogue bad actor.
