Irish Government bows to pressure over Newman Canonisation

From the article…Newman’s words on religion and science are really inspiring.

“One of the greatest disasters of modern times is the separation between religion and science, and the perfection of knowledge is a combination of both …which makes men not only educated but good Christians.”

The article is very interesting. Thank you for posting it!

I didn’t quite catch the reasoning behind the Irish government’s as well as UCD’s reluctance to send a representative to the the Canonization. It is unfortunate that they would have to “bow to pressure” simply to send a representative. Perhaps the people of Ireland would heal faster if they exhibited a bit more charity.

As understand, not everybody in Ireland is thrilled with the Catholic church. That is an understatement. Many people are upset. I have relatives there…in Dublin and all over Ireland. I’ve been to Ireland many times. I could be a citizen there. When Pope Francis came there, sadly there were protests. As I understand there is a push to secularize Irish society. On some level I understand and empathize with their anger. After all, the problems of abuse spilled over to the United States too.

Soon there will be a Catholic Saint who founded a University in Dublin, and they hardly notice. It seems like they’re trying to ignore it and hope it goes away. I think if those that are angry will at least acknowledge the positive things done by the Catholic church in Ireland, they’ll be a lot less angry. This is what I’m trying to say. Those who are angry at the Catholic church in Ireland need to show charity to the Catholic church.

Won’t happen unfortunately. There are many anti-christian lobby groups in Ireland. Doesn’t help that the Church is completely silent and we are essentially leaderless.

It’s not cool or popular to be Christian in Ireland. Pro-abortion and pro-lgbt wins votes.
