Is a lay person able to bless their younger siblings?

I know we have the authority to bless our children, and a husband can probably bless his wife, but would I be able to bless my younger adopted step-sibling? She’s having a lot of problems right now (depression, and she and her boyfriend have been noticing haunting-like occurrences in their home.)

I would talk to a psychic first and then maybe a priest. You may or may not need a priest but a good ghost hunter can clear out hauntings of the dead. Again if that’s the problem. What type of haunting like experiences? You might try holy water. I always keep some handy and blessed salt. I don’t know that the salt would have to be blessed but it couldn’t hurt.

Catholics are not allowed to consult Psychics.
 
No do not seek ghost hunters and what not. that’s just an opening for the devil to enter. Go to your priest.
 
She needs to see her priest. He can bless the house and perform a minor exorcism. If required, the Bishop can authorize the Diocesan exorcist to perform the full rite of exorcism.

In the meantime, Use the prayer to Saint Michael

Stay away from psychics and other occult charlatans.
 
I would talk to a priest ONLY (or another God-appointed person) regarding the hauntings! A psychic would not be appropriate since they are not filled (or operate) by the Holy Spirit. What does light and darkness have in common? - 2 Cor 6:14-16

She’s not Catholic so that complicates things, and we’re not living near each other.

I am not ridiculing anyone. This is the first time I’ve ever heard a catholic couldn’t go to a psychic. I would beware one thing in the church…superstition. I guess because this is “Occult” or “That which is hidden from the eyes of man” it must be evil. Remember it’s been written “All that is called evil has only been called evil to conceal it’s holiness.” I will not scare anyone with

stories. God is not the author of fear. Remember that Abraham and his brother and the High Priest later were diviners. cf Urim and Thumin. But this is not the time to discuss this. I’m bailing out.

FWLIW, I agree with MorEphrem. There’s nothing wrong with a little sarcasm, as long as it’s in its place. And IMHO I tend to think here it was misplaced. Perhaps it might help to re-read the thread title and the original post itself. The OP was asking about a familial blessing, which has nothing to do with the occult. If the people involved are “seeing things” it could well be because of depression, and I really don’t think that’s something to pooh-pooh. It might have been more apropos to suggest the that the people involved see an MD or DO trained in psychiatry before going off on GhostBusters and psychics. Why not add a witch doctor too? :rolleyes: It can really go too far.

Just my unsolicited :twocents: and since I have no idea why this thread was posted in the EC forum in the first place, I’m out of here too.

I posted this here because I wanted to hear the Byzantine tradition’s idea on who has the authority to bless who, seeing as I’m in the Ruthenian church.

Also, I mentioned her boyfriend’s witnessing of several of the occurrences to rule out depression-induced psychosis.

Seems to me that still doesn’t completely rule out something depression-related. But of course it’s none of my business and I won’t comment further.

😛 Well, I am not insinuating that she needs an exorcism, but certainly you can’t go wrong with getting the house blessed. That blessing really is powerful.
 
It is important to understand that, in the byzantine Tradition, there are two kinds of blessings

— those of Asking the lord to grant a blessing to someone (which any layman can do)
— those of Granting Christ’s Blessing (Normally only Priests and Bishops; in certain specific cases a bishop might grant the faculty to a specific archdeacon to do so at the conclusion of the hours and/or typica with communion.)

When a priest or bishop blesses, you know the Lord will back it up.
