Is a Mormon baptism valid?

I have a good friend who is Mormon, and I at least want to know that he is validly baptized. I’m not talking about the crazy baptisms-for-the-dead, I know those aren’t valid. I just mean his real baptism. It was in the Trinitarian formula (Father, Son, Holy Ghost), but of course the Mormon idea of the Holy Trinity is very different (that they are separate). So, is my friend validly baptized?

And if not, would his situation fit with baptism of desire? Clearly he wanted to be truly baptized, and he was just doing what he thought was true. Is that a stupid idea I just said?

I was raised Mormon and converted to the Catholic Church. Mormon baptism is NOT valid b/c of their concept of who God is.

The only thing I can offer is that you pray for your friend, invite him to mass with you, and live your life as a holy example of Christ’s true church. Clearly someone was praying for me.

What kind of baptism of desire did he intend? Did he believe Mormom baptism was equivalent to the kind of Trinitarian baptism conferred by proper formula and action by the Catholic Church, the Orthodox Church or some Christian ecclesial community?

Perhaps if you elaborate, you will attract some further assistance.

A few years back the Diocese of Salt Lake City issued a statement that Mormon baptisms are not accepted as valid by the Catholic Church. This is because the Mormons regard the Trinity as three separate gods. Thus, while they use the Trinitarian formula in baptism, they do not mean the same thing as the Catholic Church does by that formula.

No, his baptism is not valid. This would not count as a baptism by desire. No, you’re idea isn’t stupid at all.

Help in what way? Your friend chooses to believe in a non Chritian faith. That is completely his or her choice. Remember, there is freedom of religion. You can hope and pray that he converts, but hey, we’re all one big happy family right?

I am praying for him and his family every day. I will always have hope that he will one day find the truth of the Catholic faith. The good thing is that he is extremely open to discussing faith, and that is mostly all we talk about. It is so nice to have a friend who I can talk to about Catholicism, even if he isn’t Catholic (yet )!

One day he expressed to me this idea: Since there are so many different faiths, our faiths are statistically probably wrong, that there is a very slight chance that our faiths are right. I told him that would be true except that in my case it had a 100% chance that it was right. Heheh. Anyway, that gave me hope that he isn’t totally convinced Mormonism is the one true faith, but only that he thinks it to be the most right. Other than that, he seems fairly firm in his Mormon faith, but I can at least plant a seed within him so that he may seek Catholicism later in life.

Anyway, regarding the “help” I was seeking, (I was a little vague, huh? ) I just meant suggestions on how to help him find the truth. Thanks all!
