Recently I purchased a 15 volume set of the Liturgical Year originaly written by Abbot Gueranger, OSB.

So far, in my readings during Lent, the writings seem to follow the old Church Liturgical Year (Pre years A, B, C). The passages, prayers, and hyms are wonderful. The commentary that goes with the daily Scripture readings do mention where and why the Jews of that day were disobedient to God and discussed how they separated themselves from God by their disobedience. As of yet, I haven’t felt the commentaries were being antisemetic. But, I started recieving email “updates” from the person who sold be the set online, and his opinions seem rather clear regarding things like WW II, concentration camps etc. - a further look at his online store (which I didn’t see when I purchased the set from Ebay) has mostly items and history favorable to the Nazi party.

I searched a few places on line to see if this reading is acceptable Catholic reading, and it seems that it is, although a few sites seem to clearly state that Abbot Gueranger was a known anti semetic, and that his writings clearly show that.

Can someone share with me more on who Abbot Gueranger was, and what is the accepted view of his place in Catholic teaching?

Thank you, and God Bless

Since you have been reading his own words and have not found them to be anti-semitic, it seems that the question becomes “who are you going to trust, those websites or your lying eyes?” 😉

Abbot Gueranger is the priest who restored the abbey at Solesmes in the 19th century. I have never heard anything but good things about him. Here is some info from the website of the abbey: History of Solesmes
