Is an annulment necessary?

A couple who divorced was only married in a civil ceremony and one wants to remarry in the church - is an annulment necessary?
 
Since he/she attempted marriage before, the Church must determine the nullity of that marriage prior to a subsequent marriage in the Church. Depending on the circumstances, this may entail an abbreviated (documentary) process or a standard process.
