I am married 33 years to a man who told me after 2 years of marriage that he was not happy. Being a devout catholic I prayed and stayed in the marriage which produced two beautiful children. My husband, also catholic, suffered due to severe dysfunction in his family of origen and although he went for counseling he never agreed to marriage counseling. Twelve years ago he moved out and only came home on week-ends; he was having an affair which went on for at least four years. He repented to me (but did not go to confession) and five years ago said he wanted to try again. Less than a year after that he said he couldn’t “do this anymore” and moved out permanently. I prayed, fasted, received counsel for two of those years in an attempt to save our marriage but two years ago he said he wanted a divorce. The final paperwork should be coming through in the next few months. My question is this; since I don’t feel any great desire to re-marry and still hold out the hope that one day perhaps he will truly repent and return, is it necessary for me to get an annulment?
