Is there any occult action that is purely mental, that is, not having any physical ritual or movement attached to it and such that it could be performed by the proverbial “brain in a jar”?

Is astral projection of this type?

That would have to be under the assumption that any action could be done, including those with verbal or somatic involvement could be done by the mind alone, without any sort of evocation/invocation of some spiritual entity.

If Astral Projection is possible, is it by the persons own abilities? Or is it by some sort of spiritual influence that they are unaware of? There really is no way to be sure of things of this nature, and probably safer not to mess with them (at least in my humble opinion).

By “occult” I mean to imply invocation of spirits but an invocation that is purely mental.

I would think the answer would be an affirmative yes. We often invoke saints in our mind with silent prayers. We invoke God in private prayers. We believe very seriously that God does indeed hear our thoughts and answers our prayers, spoken or not.

We should also assume that ‘demons’ being angels by nature, can also hear and respond to thoughts when directed at them. If someone were to ‘pray’ to Satan, then I would imagine that they could indeed communicate and by nature ‘invoke’ him.

Unless we assume that only by being in the presence of God can a being have the ability to hear thoughts? Yet that opens the thought that someone in purgatory and not in Heaven would also be unable to pray for us, as they couldn’t hear us. Then we could assume that it’s possible that only those in the Body of Christ in the afterlife can hear thoughts, but I’m not sure the bible/tradition go into any sort of thought about this.

Two parts to this:

First, the planting of negative thoughts can lead the subject to come down with a real illness or suffering an “accident” based on psychological induction … psychosomatic illness.

Second, the summoning up of evil spirits … so-called preternatural spirits … to do real damage to self or another person.

Two good reasons to avoid fooling with this occult stuff.

There is a Church prohibition on cursing someone. And this is the essence of it.

So you’re saying that these spells or curses can be accomplished by only the act of the mind?

And btw, I’m not planning on doing it but I approach it from the POV that it’s good to know your enemy.

Sorry; don’t understand your comment … “only the act of the mind” …?

You can use words or deeds to plant negative suggestions within someone else’s brain. But once within that other person, they become ways to cause the other person’s body AND mind to “malfunction”.

And … “good to know your enemy” … how does that fit in?

This thread is all about whether curses or such things can be performed w/o anything except mental willing (an act of the mind).

So if you were a brain in a jar, could you put a curse on someone?

As for my other “know your enemy” comment, it is non-essential so I’m not going to waste space explaining it.

Monte RCMS gave you the essence of it in his post #5 when he said it could be mental as you say (mind over matter) or it can involve the diabolical. In either case the perpetrator has unfair advantage over another and the amount of power wielded is directly proportional to how far both the perpetrator and the victim are from God. Conversely, spells and curses have little (if any) detrimental effect on Christians that are solidly grounded in the Truth.

The irony of it all is the more one gets involved in the occult for the purpose of gaining power over others the more free will one unknowingly gives up in the process. And the final sad state of the occultist is a complete loss of free will (i.e. perfect possession by one or more unclean spirits). Not something to play around with.
