I’m from Manchester so know that genre very well.
Let’s hope Ian Curtis doesn’t influence you too much 😉
Andy Rourke from The Smiths (post-post…) was in my brother’s class at school.

While I can’t say I don’t have some qualms about it, I have to admit to being a fan of quite a few post punk bands: Public Image Ltd., Talking Heads, The Cure, Swans, R.E.M., Dead Can Dance, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, New Order, Skinny Puppy, The Smiths… I’ve even been known to rock Bauhaus on occasion (King Volcano ftw!)

Of course, some of these groups fall into very different ends of the post-punk spectrum (Skinny Puppy and Swans to name a few), they all still fit the bill.

My old band used to play in NYC a lot and some of those punk and post-punk guys from the late 70’s and early 80’s would show up at the different shows sometimes (esp. when we played the Lower East Side). You mentioned Joy Division, I used to listen to them a lot, along with Television, The Talking Heads and others. Our sound was more The Stooges meets the Ramones as done by The 13th Floor Elevators (that’s how one website described it), but I always liked post-punk. I’m not sure where Blondie would fall but we did an impromptu jam one night with Frank Infante, that was really cool!
I’m still a fan but I had to step away from that whole scene when I came into the Church, just way too much that came along with the music scene that had nothing to do with music.

I’m a big fan of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds.

I also like The Smiths,The Cure, and Sonic Youth.

Those bands are post punk? Then I guess I like some post punk. I maybe would have used the terms “new wave” or “college radio” for some of those. I like the Smiths “The Queen is Dead” album.

I only have a vague idea of what post-punk means. I imagine it’s what we used to call “new wave” only it’s really second generation new wave. That is, bands that came along slightly after and were perhaps inspired by Blondie and Gary Neumann and Richard Hell and the Talking Heads. They tended to be British and they used quite a bit of electronica including what I felt at the time were very obnoxious drum machines (of course now I realize that was the point, to be obnoxious and alienating in order to make a point; that’s the punk in post-punk I guess.)

To be honest I couldn’t stand these bands (the Cure, Joy Division, Yaz, etc.) the first time they came around. I was born in the wrong decade for my musical tastes and always preferred classic rock, especially psychedelic rock. During the 80’s I liked Elvis Costello, Joe Jackson and Kate Bush; somehow I don’t think they’re considered part of post-punk, unless it’s only considered a time bracket.

But very recently as in a month ago I went through an early David Bowie phase and in the course of that I discovered the first of his Berlin albums “Low” and in listening to it and getting used to its quirks I had an “aha” moment and understood finally what it was all about: the drum machines and synthesizers wedded to a warped, emotionally deadened pop sensibility – like music from the future for robots. So now I’m ready to listen to it with a more open mind.

I think post-punk makes up half of my iPod, or a least a third.

Public Image Ltd. - I forgot about them. I’m remembering or being reminded of music I listened to years ago that liked. Sometimes I only heard the song a once or twice because it wasn’t mainstream enough to be played on pop/rock stations but I would hear it on Rock over London or Friday Night Videos (we didn’t have cable so no MTV and VH1 didn’t exist yet and yes, I had a dinosaur as a pet. A velociraptor.)

Would Social Distortion be considered post-punk? Very different sound from, say Talking Heads, but they’ve got sort of a punk sound with a lot of pop hooks. Maybe that would be pop-punk rather than post-punk?

Another thought I had… the beginning of Husker Du’s “Zen Arcade” is punk, and by the end it’s post-punk?

Maybe it depends on the song. I think the songs that get radio play are more pop punk (and therefore post-punk?) but think of the group as punk, similar to Green Day. iPod doesn’t distinguish the genre as punk but labels them “alternative.” pouts

I am a ginormous fan of The Cure, even though I only really discovered them less than 10 years ago. They’ve been around as long as I’ve been alive, but the video clip Why Can’t I Be You scared me when I was 10, so I avoided them at all costs hehe, until the day I saw the video clip to Just Like Heaven and wondered why I hadn’t discovered them sooner!

I used to be part of a fan forum which closed not that long ago. I even traveled to Europe last year for a fan forum meet-up/party. Seen them here in Australia a few times. I even started to collect memorabilia, I have some really amazing items 🙂

Anyway, I also was in a relationship that was formed through a mutual love of this band, so since the relationship dissolved, I haven’t been able to bring myself to listen to them again, other than when I made my ex boyfriend a CD of important songs that I sent him for his Birthday (last year). That is over 1 year of a “Cure-drought” 😦 The music is just so strong, as were the connections and memories I have attached… I really need to put all this music back on my iPod and take a deep breath, probably prepare myself with a truckload of tissues and allow the music back into my life.

Along with The Cure I had a love of other artists, following the post-punk/new-wave genres, namely New Order, Joy Division, Clan of Xymox, Depeche Mode, The Mission and loads of other alternative styles of music, Beach House, etc…

Love love love this stuff! If I could only have the strength to let it back in… 😊
