Is anyone here a Missionary? If so, could you share your experiences?

I will soon be trying to gain admittance into some type of overseas mission. I contacted Maryknoll recently, but after having done some research on this forum, I seem to have come across a lot of negative information.

I was hoping someone who has a bit of experience could share about your overall experiences, day to day life, how you transitioned from your old life, etc.

I greatly appreciate the help and hopefully God directs me to a good mission.

Just moving this to the top in the hope that someone has some (name removed by moderator)ut.

I served in Honduras for a little under a year with the Missioners of Christ missioners.org and worked with the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal franciscanfriars.com. If you are looking for something unashamedly Catholic and dedicated to renewal and the spread of the Faith I totally recommend you get in touch with them.

I have for many years been working with youth at risk which has taken me into working with many churches, working in many provinces starting new groups in the church and other churches asking if I would help them get started.
Youth at risk are those predominantly who live under bridges, live on drugs, theft, drink overdose, none educated, as some say, no hopers. One group I had, the police said were the biggest group of young criminals in the province I lived in. It is a life dedicated too sharing the word of God in the active way, using the bible principles of the parables, therefore not impinging through preaching.
It is very dangerous if one were to look at it in that context of trying to forge good will. But it is easier to forge enemies like pimps thieves etc, it is very time consuming, but also very rewarding. God’s providence becomes very real.
There are people who wish to help, and those who wish to destroy your works. Cutting it short, I guess one of the best outcomes I had was to try and teach a group of 16 youth who lived under bridges living as I have mentioned, against common community living.

I met two of the group, a boy and a girl who had decided to marry and told me that they were taking lessons to become ministers. A group of 5 on another occasion called me to a church where they were practicing music and told me that they tried to destroy me smash my gear hide the guitars rob me and yet they couldn’t understand how I as one individual could stand up against them. So they said they couldn’t beet me so they decided that my God must be the true God so they joined a church and joined me.
There are other points as well but I hope that helps.

At present I also do a 1/2 hour teaching on our community radio and work with around 100 to 300 youth at a hostel as a security guard where i oftain have youth come up to me just because of the cleam choice of language I use and the gift of biblical knowledge I have been given.

Missionarry life is not a choice as such but a desire to serve Jesus Christ in the way the Holy Spirit leads. I find that I give away to certain people and causes money where I could hold onto it andbecome rich but I can’t because the spirit leads me to do otherwise, and for various reasons. Some reasons seem ridiculous at times but I have learned to wait for the out come which always very positively leads to Jesus Christ being glorified.

If you want more info please ask.
God bless

I spent a summer in Argentina with these missionaries:
usadms.org/

They are great. They work with both college students and poor communities (Mexicans here in the US). They are growing so fast and are totally holy men and 100 percent orthodox. I couldnt recommend them more.

I volunteered in the States, but the foreign missionaries from our organization had additional training and preparation to adjust to the third world countries they would be serving in. Also, when their service years were up, they would go through a re-entry program to get readjusted to the developed world. If God is calling you to foreign missions, great. Remember, there is also national missions that need volunteers so that is something you can look into (I had worked with missionaries that came to do their mission work in the States - they were from Germany).
