I wish there was like a health and wellness forum or something. I don’t know if this is the best place to post this but it’s not really a religious question per se.

a few of us at my church are really into organic foods, natural remodies for sickness and such. it’s almost like it’s a sub culture around here. the homeschooling, cloth diaper, organic food society. a lot of people think we are nuts.

Anyway, I’ve been doing some research on cleansing the digestave tract. it’s really intersting stuff and I was wondering if anyone here has ever done it. there are several programs I’ve seen and a lot of research on the subject. one site that I’ve been looking at is
www.drnatura.com if you check it out, be worned that there are some yucky pictures on there.
also, I’m reading a book called “cleanse and purify thyself” by Richard Anderson, N.D., N.M.D.

Anyway, I just would like to know if anyone else has done it and if so, who’s program did you use? did it do anything for you?

If you’re just reading this because you are curious, check out the site I meantioned. cleansing is not for everybody. I do believe that as Christians, it’s our duty to take good care of the temple of the Holy Spirit, so eating right is an important factor in our faith. that’s my opinion though and I don’t judge people who don’t make the same choices that I do.

It looks like a lot of fiber and some herbs. Other than costing quite a bit of money to keep up the regime, it doesn’t appear that it would harm you… unless you have a treatable disease that you avoid seeing a doctor about.

Think twice before you treat yourself with something off of an infomercial. The symptoms listed can be due to treatable conditions and serious diseases. The red flag with me on this is that Colonix seems to be promising to cure a long list of enteric symptoms that could have a very wide range of causes, from parasites to gluten intolerance to colon cancer to nothing more than an overprocessed diet. Instead of attemting to find the cause, this product may be giving temporary relief by pushing a big bolus of fiber through the gut and giving it a rest.

If you regularly have enteric health problems, you might consider seeing a doctor, or just taking foods out of your diet that are likely to cause problems. My sister-in-law saw a doctor about life-long bowel problems and found that she is gluten intolerant. Once she got the gluten out of her diet, her bowel troubles were over. Her daughter, who used to have migraines, eats like her mother and now doesn’t have the problem.

As for being a Temple of the Holy Spirit, God gave you a body for which a temperate life is usually the proper care. With proper diet and exercise, the colon of a healthy person is a self-cleansing organ. It doesn’t need outside “cleansers” any more than your liver or your vagina does. A healthy person also does not typically have a lot of bloating, gas, and so on. If Colonix really helps you, at least consider finding out why. Absence of Colonix is probably not the evil at work.

well, you could be right, but I’ve been doing a lot of research on the subject and the point that a lot of people who are into homiopathic remadies seem to think that a lot of our problems are related to our digestive system. everything we take in goes through it and it’s the “hub” of our entire body. I do believe in a good diet. there are lot of things that I do not eat. I never eat fast food. I try to eat mostly fresh produce and breads. I avoid white processed flower and white processed sugar. I don’t buy much stuff from a box anymore either. I indulge on sweets more than I should (but that’s a woman’s right!)

I’m just wondering if anyone here has every tried a cleanse and if so, what was it like?

I did a mild cleanse once and I’ve tried to fast for a day only drinking water. this is something God wants us to do anyway. esp during lent. It’s hard though and take disciplen and it’s important to not let the whole world know you are fasting and to do it for the Lord as your first reason and any bennifets that come are a blessing from God.

I don’t have any serious conditions. a little extra weight and some acny. So don’t worry, I"m not avoiding the doctor or anything. but I do feel like a lot of the time, doctors only treat the symptoms of desease and not the cause.

So has anyone here ever done a lceanse?

The claims made by proponents of such “cleansing” have never been substantiated in a well-run scientific study. In fact, those claims usually fly in the face of everything we know about digestive physiology.

I was talking this over with my husband, and looking at those pictures almost makes one want to try it just in case those horrid things are inside our bodies. But then I remembered my days working with colonoscopy patients, and I never saw anything like that inside the colons that came by our hospital. This isn’t saying that things like that don’t exist in some people, it’s just that they’re not in everyone. And if you think about it, the colons getting a colonoscopy are either 1)old and just getting a check-up, or 2)of people who actually have (suspected) bowel problems. These colons generally looked squeaky clean after the laxatives administered to the patients, without a months-long cleansing.

You know, that’s what I was thinking. I was treated for a colitis flare-up last year in the hospital (and I had the wonderful experience with that stuff they make you drink before the procedure, which, by the way, is beyond gross tasting - like thick saltwater) And I saw the pictures from it (the colonoscopy) - it looked perfectly clear to me - I mean, this is a picture of my intestines…I think the doctor would notice if there was any of that kind of stuff going on.

I almost hope that website is faking pictures and that stuff did not actually come out of people. Ewww smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/29/29_3_13.gif

So I read the stupid testimonial…

The guy starts ingesting this stuff, and after a while, he starts passing disgusting things. This goes on for a while, then tapers off.

So he doubles his intake of the product, and within a day, starts passing more disgusting things.

The company says, “Keep using our product until you stop passing disgusting things.”

Now, they claim that their product is “cleansing” out this disgusting stuff from your intestines.

But what if…just hypothetically, you know…what if their “product” has only one real function – and that function is to produce really disgusting, ugly stools, that scare the heck out of folks who pass them?

That would be quite a little racket, wouldn’t it? “Keep using our product until you stop passing weird stuff!” Don’t mention that what the product does is produce weird stuff…

Er…I’ll pass on this one… 😉

You know what really works is lots of fruits, and veggies, I love the farmers market. I’m a vegan just months ago, and It is so amazing how your body feels, and your skin looks, I like to think like the chinese, and there diet, they know how to eat very healthy, I mean look at how beautiful the woman are! So I guess I will apply those principles. 👍 Keep on the right track of eating like you are your body will thank you, and the earth, and animals will to. Remember… What would Jesus eat 👍 God bless, Piper

As opposed to “What would Jesus have eaten?”
Jesus probably ate lots of fish, lots of whole grains and veggies, some lamb, and drank alcohol, among other things.
John, though, was into wild honey and locusts.
Of course, we all remember the first Christians going around about this, and coming out in the end against blood and the meat of strangled animals. Pretty broad guidelines, those.
The world of food and agriculture is is a different world now, though.
Better to ask… what would God have you eat?

🙂 I’m just curious where you got all that info  Your friend in Christ Jesus, Piper

There are several health and wellness forums out there but they will not have a Catholic flavor to them. The following links may give you more information to help you discern whether or not this is something you want to do.
mercola.com/
wellnessforum.com/
swiftlynx.com/hfn/

The following link provides a whole bunch of links to different fora related to health and the like. It is definitely not Catholic in nature.

You can also go to www.google.com and do a search on Colonix and see what comes up. Most of the sites that rave about it advertise it in some way. I am always leary of things that cost this much money when there are cheaper alternatives.

I am very interested in health and wellness but I refuse to do things based on information posted by someone that stands to benefit monetarily. There are tons of really good books out there that explore this topic further and provide suggestions without recommending a single product. I would recommend that you read some of them before embarking on any kind of cleansing program. One of the books that really helped me was “Intuitive Eating: Everybody’s Natural Guide to Total Health and Lifegiving Vitality Through Food” by Humbar Santillo. Of all the books I have read, he seems to present the most balance approach. It is not about spending tons of money on cleansing products. You can achieve much of the same results through dietary changes and/or fasting.

Peace be with you!

I have one of the GI conditions listed specifically on their website. I’m sure it is an effective product. The whole premise is based on fiber, which is precisely what my GI specialist recommended to help me with my problems.

Except my off-brand orange-flavored fiber supplement (like metamucil or something of that sort) works like a charm every time for a lot less money! They now have cookies and crackers if you don’t like the drink mix, but I find it very tasty to add the mix to a smoothie rather than a beverage.

Be careful with that metamucil stuff!! I was drinking some the other day, when my husband suddenly said “I drinks it for the flava!” and I burst out laughing, getting metamucil up my nose. Boy, did that hurt! And the next time I was drinking some, hubby had the nerve to smile, which reminded me of the previous fiasco, causing me to laugh, and I got it up my nose again! :rotfl:

Dear Sue Krum,
This cleansing fad goes way back. I think there is merit to it, to a certain extent. Back ‘in the day’, in the 1970’s when I came of age, a lot of us were into Jethro Kloss. I believe he was a Seventh Day Adventist. He wrote a book called ‘Back to Eden’. He’s from the same era and school of thought as Kellog, I believe. He was a healer and really into different cleansing techniques, including colonics, sweats, etc…

Back in Calif I met many people who got a little obsessed with this colonic cleansing bit. There was a fad of different techniques, including high colonics, coffee enemas, etc. Frankly, one fellow I knew seemed a little obsessed with his colon. I think he might have damaged it with too many enemas. I personally know of one fellow who rigorously followed the raw food routine, with the whole cleansing bit, and he was hospitalized with a GI bleed. In other words, you can damage the delicate intestinal mucosa with too much fiber and ‘cleansing’. Also, you can lose your peristaltic tone, which means that the intestines can’t do their thing properly and move the poop down the tract in peristaltic waves like it’s supposed to. So I would go easy on the colon cleansing.

The best thing you can do for your colon tract is to keep a healthy enviornment there with a high fiber diet, full of fruits and veggies, and take supplements of lactobacillous, primadopholis, or some other high potency ‘friendly bacteria’, which comes in capsule form in the refrigerated section of your health food aisle at the grocery store, or health food store. There are many different strains, and these have been scientifically proven to boost the immune system, and keep the intestinal tract healthy.
