At my parish, important announcements are periodically made at the very end of the liturgy, just before the words of dismissal and the closing hymn. On certain occasions, we parishioners may applaud depending on the nature of the announcement. Just an example: our pastor recently announced his future transfer to a different parish, and we applauded him for his years of service to our community. Is this appropriate? It doesn’t bother me mainly because the applause is in reaction to very mundane things, and the liturgy has pretty much come to a close. Otherwise, I find applause during the Mass highly inappropriate.
