Is birth control allowed for serious health reasons?

My daughter is having continual problems with her monthly cycle. She has had 4 children, been diagnosised with cervical cancer, and now endometriosis. My fear is that they will prescribe a birth control pill to alleviate the symptoms, pain, and heavy bleeding that she endures. I was taught that you were not allowed to take or use any kind of birth control. Is there an exception to this?
