Now I know breaking the law is sin but if you, for example, screenshotted something on the internet to post on snapchat. Is this even sin? Is it mortal? I can be a bit scrupolous with this, sorry

Not every act against the (just) law of the state is a grave sin.

It does not seem to me that posting a screenshot on social media is sinful. Something like fair use would likely apply, I imagine.

And what about watching a YouTube video with lyrics which was not uploaded by the artist. Also what about films uploaded illegally on YouTube?

That is another matter, as merely watching those videos is not against the law (at least where I am).

YouTube has provisions in place to allow eligible rights holders to block or monetize for themselves such infringing material, and in those cases we can more or less take it as approval, although I dont know how far those extend (i.e. not every single video on YouTube, naturally, is approved by the rights holder).

On other sites there is a far greater reason for assuming that the uploads have not been granted any kind of approval, and in these cases they are to be avoided so as to not support the persons involved with ad revenue and such.

Personally, I use official/licensed channels exclusively in order to circumvent these issues entirely.
EDIT - basically for the reasons TheLittleLady gives below in post #8.

This debate has happened many times in this forum.

To deprive a workman of his wages is a grave sin.

The people who made that music or video or movie deserve to be compensated. When we consume stolen goods, we assist in the deprivation of their compensation.

Why would you think that this is against the law? Have you ever read of somebody being prosecuted for a screenshot?
