Is Christianity about love?

As you probably observed, I am one of those people trying to manage their mental illness.

I think about myself as a child, growing up in a boring Catholic Church with parents who meant well for me but didn’t teach me much of the faith except for prayer. I am sure in this secular world it is a tragedy for many. (If that word is appropriate).

I remember being interested in religion as a child, a catechism teacher read us the Bible, and even explained other religions. She herself was a convert to the Catholic Church and is grateful for the sacrament of confession, bringing her to tears.

I was reading the book, the Life of Pi, and wasn’t sure if I should be upset or amazed at him taking an interest in five different religions. All religions are not equal, and most atheists don’t know this. However, what amazes me is that Pi is NOT an atheist! He believes in God, whether it be in signs he sees and believes that God will be there when he passes away into the next life.

Belief in God, is what struck me. He despises DOUBT in God. There is a passage in the book that reads when an atheist is dying he will suddenly believe in God, however an agnostic will be too preoccupied with the slowing of oxygen to his b-b-brain!

When Pi meets a Catholic priest, Fr Martin, he is told that God is LOVE.

What is love for? I cannot understand this? There are many types of love, tough love, sacrificial love, etc.

But what type of love can people with mental illness or people who don’t fit into society, give wholeheartedly to others?

I think it is a love of compassion, NOT juding (gay, homeless, whatever). And being thankful to God for each day, and perhaps speaking against sin if it is necessary.

I find that many atheists just care about science and sex. I can’t stick that, even if it is socially acceptable.

Thank you for reading this long post.

Beloved, let us love one another
For love is of God and everyone who loveth is born of God and knoweth God
He that loveth not, knoweth not God for God is love

1 John 4:7-8 (KJV because that is the version I memorized as a kid) 🙂

I’d also suggest you sit down with 1 Corinthians chapter 13, much more beneficial than “Life of Pi” (read it when it first came out, it was an odd book).

I can’t comment on Pi as I don’t know anything about him. Having mental or emotional issues doesn’t stop people from loving God and neighbor. God tells us in the first commandment that we are to love Him. He also tells us to love our neighbor ( that means everyone )
Love of neighbour by being kind and (when possible ) helpful
Love of self by taking good care of oneself
Love of God by obeying and trusting Him .
St. Benedict Joseph Labre had some mental health issues which didn’t stop him from loving God with all his heart.

Great Topic.

We are supposed to be disciples of Christ, Christ is pure love, everythink he ever did, spoke, everything he ever wanted for us to do is pure, unselfish, love. The kind you actually help each other, the kind that you never ever turn someone who needs you. The kind that you should treat each other like a brother (or sister!). Everyone gets so fixated on how we do have laws. Not rules, they are laws from God himself. But we ought to be humble, compassionate, caring, loving. That’s what being a Catholic is. There’s no exception. We are supposed to be the representatives of love on earth. Hear what Jesus says, like really read them, you’ll see.

The most amazing Christian of my era was all about LOVE . Was vocally very, very quiet but LOVED…
Her name was Mother Teresa. Her life was the gospel lived.
