My father did not know the day he was born. He chose a day and it didn’t matter. What mattered was honoring his life.
I agree. In that way the day doesn’t matter. One could live one’s whole life just fine not knowing, being content to wait till we know all things in eternity.

But if he should find out definitively, through no effort of his own, wouldn’t it be exciting for him to know - for you all to know? His “old” birthday would always be special, having made it so, by tradition - a rich and treasured tradition of love and honor shared on that day. But his new “actual” day would be very special in its own way. It would be very exciting to know, and one would treasure knowing this very special, real, fact about this very special person.

He shows several ways to get to it. Rather than discrediting him, look it over and do the math yourself. Is there a particular objection you have?
I did. But “math” based on historical inferences is at best a way of estimating a potential time frame, not a precise date. Dec 25th is definitely a possibility. But again, it’s only an educated guess. Sungenis argues as if he’s defending a solid fact, which is nonsense. Even the official Catholic explanation admits it was chosen to replace a pagan holiday that had a number of similarities. I see nothing wrong with that and have no problem picking a day to celebrate his birth. Just let’s be honest about it.

Eliza10:
But, in true historical fact, our Church has a tradition of relying on tradition. We hold fast to the traditions handed down to us by the Apostles of Christ.
But the Church admits this date is not established on tradition. The earliest recorded guess is from Clement who guessed it to be May 20th. The Dec 25th date wasn’t established for 300 years after Clement’s guess. So we can be pretty confident that it wasn’t handed down from the Apostles.

Eliza10:
So who is to say they divorced themselves from all of these long-standing traditions, and relied instead solely on what was available of cold, hard historical clues, alone?
If you read Sungenis’s article, the guessers tell you how they came up with the guesses. No one claims to have heard from a long-standing tradition.

Eliza10:
Yes, sure. And also to definatively state 12/25 is *not *the date, as was done elsewhere on this thread, is intellectually dishonest. And both are completely unimaginative, aren’t they?
Agreed. Dec 25th has a 1/365 chance of being correct purely from a statistical standpoint.

Some actually put the year as 7 to 4 BC based on the star that appeared.

Some also say that the magi reached Jesus when he was two yrs. old. (just imagin how long would it take for some men on camelback to reach Palestine from Meposotamia) it seems that the shepherds coming and the magi are separate incidents.

This is not true. No such admission has been made. It is true you can find some Catholic theologians that will make such personal educated guesses. That does not make it an official admission of the Church! And I am I ever thankful for that, as we have educated theologians such as Fr. O’Brien saying all kinds of weird things are Catholic, that are definately not Catholic.

Oh, no, there are earlier recorded mentions of Dec. 25. Yes, Clement guessed and admitted so. He said that there are “people who say…” [this or that date]. So it is an established fact that there has been a long history of speculation about the date.

What I propose is, can the Holy Spirit, amidst the speculation and guesses about the true date, preserve the actual date of the Incarnation? And use the Catholic Church - even with all the fallible people in it - to do that for us?

We Catholics know this is not a stretch. It can be done and has be done.

Then another question is, would the Holy Spirit do that? I say, why would the Holy Spirit not preserve the date of the birth of our Savior?

I also ask: Would the authorities of the Church not seriously pray over such a matter? I say, of course they would!

We have no evidence Liberius made his decsion based on one-upping a pagan holiday. That is pure speculation, though oft-repeated.

Sugenis’ article is good. There are many others. Here is one with some additional information: doig.net/NTC09.htm
And there are more interestig facts here: newadvent.org/cathen/03724b.htm
And there’s lots others!

Well, you can do all kinds of things with statistics. Yet these seem to be quite off by anybody’s standards! Wouldn’t you consider the earliest guesses to have more statistical weight than, say, Oct. 10, which no one has mentioned to be a possible date?

I think saying Dec. 25th has a 1/365 chance of being Chistmas is way off. A very poor statistical guess!

And remember, our Church’s tradition is to make rulings based on tradition and prayer and with the guidance of the Holy Spirit - not “science” alone. And there is no evidence that prayer or tradition were abandonned or unconsidered when officially naming the day that the Word became flesh and dwelt among us.

Why doesnt the Catholic Church know the exact date of Jesus?

Why didnt the Apostles know Jesus birthday?

Did the Jews of those days not celebrate their birthdays?

How can the Church say that Jesus was born if they do not know his exact birthdate, isnt this an important date?

A thorough analysis of the actual historical birth day of Jesus has been done in an amazing research document, which is available for free download here:

Poem of the Man-God Research Document

In this e-book, there is a chapter entitled:

“Proof (or a Substantiating Factor) by its Astronomic Substantiation of the Bimillenial Tradition that Christ Was Born on December 25, 1 B.C., its Contributions that Enable a Perfect Calendrical Understanding of the Fulfillment of the 70 Week Messianic Prophecy of Daniel, and the Fact that Information in the Poem Has Enabled University Professors and Ancient Calendar Specialists to Exactly Date Almost Every Event in the Canonized Gospels Down to the Year, Month, Part of the Month, and Often Day. Also, a Remarkable Discovery that Jesus’ Age of Death Was Exactly 33.3 Years at 3 p.m. and His Age from Birth Was Exactly 33.333 Years (with No Rounding) When He Rose on the 3rd Day, and Other Notable “Coincidences” with the Divine Number 3 (Such as NASA’s Report that the Sun’s Mass is 333 Thousand Times that of the Earth)”

That chapter provides significant evidence that Christ was truly born in 1 B.C. If you don’t believe me, just take a look at it and you will be surprised.

This e-book discusses the revelations to the controverted (but in actuality, Church-approved) Italian mystic Maria Valtorta whose writings St. Padre Pio commanded multiple spiritual children of his to read. Her revelations have been proven by multiple areas of science to be 99.6% historically accurate and have allowed university professors and ancient calendar specialists to actually date exact dates of Our Lord’s life.

In fact, Blessed Gabriel Allegra was beatified by Pope Benedict XVI on September 29, 2012 and Blessed Gabriel Allegra, O.F.M. was an outspoken and avid long-time supporter of Maria Valtorta and spent the latter years of his life studying, promoting, and defending the Poem of the Man-God (Maria Valtorta’s major work).
