Is detraction a sin?

Our bulletin had an article about detraction. I didn’t realize that this was a sin when we were discussing other people. My friend constantly emails me with complaints of what her friends did and said, and how angry she gets from it. These people she’s talking about for the most part aren’t people I know, and I don’t discuss this with anyone.
