Deliberately and knowingly choosing to doubt a revealed truth that the Church makes incumbent upon Catholics to believe may indeed be a mortal sin. Temptations to unbelief however are just temptations and should be rejected, and difficulties in understanding are not the same thing as doubt. As Cardinal John Henry Newman once said, “Ten thousand difficulties do not make one doubt.”
