I am quite confused about this issue. If I purchase a disc from the store, that disc belongs TO ME. If I want to let my brother borrow the disc over the weekend, i can because it’s my disc. If i want to let the whole world enjoy that disc, is that a sin?

Youtube is perfectly legal. They have websites, that are legal, that you can transcode a video from youtube from video format to mp3 format. What’s the difference between doing that and just downloading something from the net? Isn’t the end result the same?

Also, I was watching a movie yesterday. If I would have had a VHS recorder, I could have downloaded it. Is it a sin that I downloaded it (being that if i would have had a VHS it would have been perfectly legal)? Isn’t the end result the exact same either way?

I understand that stealing is wrong, that is, if I go to the store, and take something without paying for it, it is wrong. But if I want to make my brother a copy of a CD that I BOUGHT, is that wrong? I paid for that disc. I can share it with whom i please (at least i think.)

Please tell me the Church’s stance on this issue.

God Bless,
