I am quite aware of all the debate surrounding this topic, but all I’m really looking for is a simple answer: is female ordination considered a heresy? If so, supporting it would result in a latae sententiae excommunication as per Canon 1364, correct?

The act itself? No, the act itself is the simulation of a sacrament.

Heresy deals in beliefs. From the Catechism: “Heresy is the obstinate post-baptismal denial of some truth which must be believed with divine and catholic faith, or it is likewise an obstinate doubt concerning the same” (CCC, 2089).
If so, supporting it would result in a latae sententiae excommunication as per Canon 1364, correct?
What do you mean by ‘support’? Are you talking about a cleric or laity? What if a person didn’t believe in it, per se, but supported the action because they felt it to be an issue of gender justice – would you still make the assertion that heresy was involved?

Perhaps you’re thinking of the penalties set forth for those who simulate the Mass or another sacrament?

Thank you for the answer, JohnR77. I understand that “female ordination” is a contradiction, but I referred to it as such for simplicity’s sake. Perhaps I should have put “ordination” in quotation marks 😛

So supporting/believing in female ordination does indeed result in excommunication?

For example, what if a priest stated that it is possible to ordain women, and the Church needs to change her teachings on the matter? I’m not quite sure how one can support the action without believing in it. Can you elaborate on this?

If a Catholic priest is saying something like this, he is in a very dangerous state. You should counsel him against this and, if necessary, write to his bishop. Don’t worry about whether he is guilty of heresy. He needs counsel and correction.

The bishop is already being informed of this particular case. I have no intention of publicly or privately accusing him of heresy, but I wanted to be sure that this was, indeed, a heretical belief. Thank you.

Female Ordination is a self contradiction. It cannot be. An attempt at female ordination is a heretical and futile endeavor. To believe that at some point in time in the future the Catholic Church will approve of female ordination has been declared heretical. See right hand column at

Yes, well, you see , here not the brain but the genitals count. Shame on you for having the wrong type, although you may atone by generous donations.

Perhaps one day you will receive healing for your abortion and the bitterness you demonstrate here will heal with it.

I am sorry you have such a view of Holy Mother Church.
