And yet virtually no one (including members of the Catholic Church) has defined woman’s role as superior (at least until recent decades) so this claim is dubious at best.

A family unit and a National Government are two very different systems. I dont see how one can apply the same principals of governance to each. A National Goverment is responsible for protecting the interests of millions of people of diverse cultural traditions and priorities over a landmass covering thousands of square miles. A family unit consists of one household where all of the members are typically blood related and come from the same cultural heritage and typically have unified purpose. The analogy given here by AngryAthiest that a family can be likened to a National Government seems to be a bit innapropriate. AngryAthiest, your analogy is like taking a small 300x300 pixel image of a bag of catfood and blowing it up to billboard size and then displaying it on mainsteet and expecting to benefit from increased catfood sales.

I do however, find it appropriate to liken a family to the preparation of a large feast: If all members who are working in the kitchen have their own idea of how the meal is to look, and all assert themselves equally, the situation in the kitchen becomes confused and inneffiecient and unworkable, and the end result is only frustration and bad food. However, if the members choose the most experienced chef for creating the meal plans; and trust in the chef, then the chef will come up with a vision steeped in experience, and will then delegate tasks and resposibilities required for the meal’s completion. The head chef orders the kitchen and oversees the cooking processes to ensure quality and efficiency. The preparation of the meal has a great chance of succeeding in this way, and the feasters will likely be made happy with their harmonious and delicious food.

By likening a family to the preparation of a feast, I am describing an organization of people who are creating a feast, and not the food that is placed upon the table.

This type of “organization” is similiar to a family in its scale and purpose; and in fact this very “organization” is commonly formed by families and churches.

Please keep in mind that verse in Corinthians you mentioned states (at least in my NAB) tha the head of every man is Christ and a husband is the head of his wife. That’s a big difference than saying that men are the head of women. John Paul ll put that verse into the context of our times (and many ones like it) in his encyclicals others have posted links to. We must keep in mind the time, culture, and context in which letters of the Bible are written and what was occurring in the place they were addressed to. In this, it was Corinth and we need to remember that . Encyclicals written in our own times help put certain bible passages into language and understanding of our contemporary times and culture.

Also one must remember that in the past many times it is a patriarchal society, and men were consulted about everything that a woman was to learn, to follow the rules held by the Jewish communities of the time. To be paying attention to what was being said by the temple rabbis and not be in discussion during the service. A patriarchal society places the man as the head of the family, and it is through the man that things are permitted, owned or worshiped in the days of Corinthians. It is not out of disrespect, or lack of love for the women of that time in any way. It is in fact a high honor that women should feel that men would take such care in properly instructing them in the ways of God and what was to be learned. Without men as rabbi’s todays modern women would not have an understanding of Scripture. Females were never allowed to read from the Torah, only men. So it is by man that woman learned so many things.
Like God, when He put Adam to sleep and took his rib to form woman. We are a part of man, God became man that He may be here with us, and from man we are nourished and grow in understanding.

All these things suggest that men are better than women.
That’s not what I believe (I personally think its all nonsense) but women were viewed as inferior throughout most of human history, and Scripture was often used to justify that viewpoint.
