My wife and I want to tithe. Let’s say 10% of our income. Are there guidelines on what constitutes proper giving? For instance, does all charitable giving, church donations, and even financial assistance to a family member count as part of the 10%?

Tithe means 10%. Any other percentage is giving, but it is not a tithe.

Christians are not bound by the Levitical laws of tithing, we are called to give with an open heart and to give with a cheerful heart and to support our parish as well as charities. Only you know how much that is.

One rule some people follow is 5% to your parish, 2 % to the Diocese and the other giving to local charities. If you can afford more, that is wonderful! If you cannot afford that, do what you can.

Whether to consider helping your family as charitable giving is really up to you.
