I practice a Friday penance by choosing not to eat meat on almost all Fridays of the year. On the few occasions that I do eat meat on a Friday, I try to remember to choose another penance instead. (I know all Fridays of Lent and also Ash Wednesday are days I MUST abstain from meat and that I MUST also fast on Good Friday/Ash Wednesday.) I’ve had discussions with some Catholics who seem to have never heard of the Friday penance. I think it is still a practice we must observe, but perhaps I am incorrect. If the practice is still current, if I forget to choose another penance if I choose to eat meat on a general Friday, is that a venial sin or a mortal sin? Thank you!
