Is "geez" taking the Lord's name in vain?

I used this word today, and then it occurred to me that it sounds a lot like “Jesus” and probably comes from his name. But I thought it so unthinkable that this common word I had grown up with could be a mortal sin.

I read online today that if one has doubts about the gravity of a matter and does no research to resolve the doubt and acts anyway, then they mortally sin because it shows they were willing to offend God.

In my case I guess I had doubt about “geez” being a mortal sin, and I used it a few more times before looking up whether it was okay or not. I didn’t have the will to offend God, I just felt so certain it couldn’t have been sinful. Now I’m worried I may have mortally sinned…

Saying geez in a passing manner is not grave matter to begin with. So, no worries about it being a mortal sin.

Your concern about not looking into it also doesn’t rise to the level of a mortal sin either.

I come from the Archie Bunker era…no, it is not a sin…

Geez Edith

I never thought of “gee”, “geez”, “gee whillikers”, “geez-o-man”, “Geez Louise”, “golly gee”, “jeepers” etc as taking the Lord’s name in vain.

My mother objected to “geez” because she thought it sounded too much like Jesus. She was however fine with “gee”, “jeepers”, “by gosh,” “by golly” etc.

Unless you worship Geez or Gosh (same concept), I don’t think it could be.

Most Catholics I know say “oh my gosh” as an exclamation to avoid taking the Lord’s name in vain.

BTW, here’s 112 posts on your exact question re geez:

Is saying Geez... wrong? Moral Theology
When I think about it, the word Geez is simply a corrupted, shortened form of the name Jesus. Is it therefore wrong to say the word Geez?

Uh, do you happen to know where you read that? It sounds like a scruples’ trap…

So in my case, I had a slight doubt about “geez” being okay and thought “'nah, that’s crazy, that can’t be a sin” and so I said it anyway…

Yeah, I don’t know… The thing I just read probably made my scruples go mad…

Haha…at first i thought you were refering to the Eritrean-Erhiopian Liturgical language (they celebrate Mass every sunday at the parish I go to).
Anyway, I see taking the Lord’s name mostly about calling yourself a Chrudtian but still refuse to adherw to Church teachibgs.
But I am not sure what the decalogue actually refers to.

Back in 1940, when the Hays Code was in full swing, Walt Disney was able to get away with naming a character “Jiminy Cricket.” The enforcers knew what it meant, but evidently they didn’t mind.
