Is giving to an animal charity considered a work of mercy?

I try to feed and clothe the world’s hungry and poor in the only way I am able to – contributing to charities. While I’m not rich I make a small donation every month to some charity. I also donate to animal humane societies and wildlife rescue. I am wondering how God views me donating to humane societies? Am I doing a work of mercy?

Yes, contributing to animal charities can be a work of mercy. God calls us to stewardship over creation and providing for animal welfare is a means of answering that call.
