But there is more in what you (and Aquinas) claim, namely that this ‘end’ X is in our nature to desire.
So, bearing that in mind, there can be no-one who does not want to reach X.
Hence ‘wanting X’ is necessary and since the means to obtain X are also necessary, there simply is no room for any sort of free will.
Our nature to desire doesn’t require X and only X. We can want anything in the alphabet.
We have free will.

to put it in a most illuminating way,

all men desire to be happy, but the means they choose are infinite.
Some of these means may be foolish.

For Hitler, happiness meant becoming dictator of German and elimination of all enemies. He found out differently.

For Hollywood celebrities, movie stardom is the key to happiness. When their fame fades they have nothing left.
