Is homosexual adoption of older children moral?

Exactly, we are in a fallen, and as a result, very messy world where the reality is often much at odds with the Truth.

While not a moral relativist, we do have to try to do the best we can with a less than ideal situation, keeping at heart what is best for the child.

I can think of few instances where an institution can offer a child the same benefit as genuinely loving, albeit imperfect, parent.
Agreed! 👍

I think it depends on the homosexual couple. Are they openly gay? Are they sleeping around? Will they kiss, make out or have sex in front of the children? If the answer to any of these questions is “Yes” then that couple should not adopt children. The home is too dangerous and morally unsound. Children need to be brought up with good morals to prepare them for life.

There are studies that have shown that men who experience SSA can live together and be celebate, living as friends and helping each other lead a Christian life. I see nothing wrong with these people adopting children, especially older children who can’t find another home.

I agree 100%. That’s exactly what I was going to say.
I’d like to see any of you look a 5-year-old little girl in the eyes and tell her that she will never have a family who loves her, but will instead be bounced around from abusive foster home to abusive foster home until her 18th birthday when she will finally be kicked out to try and survive on her own.

Now THAT is morally reprehensible.

I’d like to see you look that 5-year old little girl in the eyes and tell her that she’s going to spend the rest of her life living with two men [or two women] who are living a perverted lifestyle which will cause much riducle and heartache and she doesn’t stand a snowball’s chance in hell of any kind of normalcy whatsoever. Oh, and her soul would be at risk, too. Nice. You look that girl in the eyes and let her know…

But what would make one suggest that gays cannot be morally responsible and avoid kissing, making out or having sex in front of children?

Most couples, including heterosexual married couples, will avoid those behaviors in front of their children, if not on moral grounds then on the grounds of preserving the intimacy of the couple by keeping private the acts proper to a married couple. At most, in most families, kids may see their parents hug each other or kiss briefly when arriving at or leaving the house, with the parents taking efforts to ensure their privacy during lovemaking.

Surely one would expect that a homosexual couple vying for adoption would be able to exercise the same self-restraint? In some cultures it is not abnormal for heterosexual men to kiss on the cheek or hug each other so that is not necessarily a homoerotic act, and the same can be said of women in N. American culture.

We are of course dealing with hypothetical situations. However, a 5-year old up for adoption that cannot be placed, is likely already a problem case. The unwanted if you will, and well-established on a downhill course. It’s not as clean cut a situation therefore as you would like it to be.

As far as I know, every single parent living or dead is/was a sinner and in some way manages to pervert the Word of God. Most of us though also have a capacity to love and do our best to do right by our children and I don’t think anything about homosexuality specifically prevents that. One should not underestimate the impact of love and stability on a wayward, unwanted child.

The ideal of course would be to find a loving, heterosexual couple to adopt the child. The world is, alas, never ideal.

The moral Truth, is of course, absolute. But pastoral action, by reason of our fallen state, is of necessity relative.

For starters, I would hope that ANY couple could avoid having sex in front of their children.

Why would the gay couple avoid kissing in front of the child? If they see nothing wrong with kissing (which they’d don’t, obviously), then they would see no reason to avoid this behavior in front of the child.

Lastly, moralilty begins at home. Since it is the obligation and responsibility of parents to teach their children how to get to heaven, it can be very difficult to do so while living an immoral lifestyle, especially when you, as a parent, believe that this immorality is not immoral.

If the Church frowns upon Godparents who aren’t Catholics in good standing, how much more so is it necessary for PARENTS to be Catholics in good standing in order to successfully raise a child in the Catholic faith? To knowingly and willingly throw a child into a situation that will endanger their soul is reckless and irresponsible, to say the very least.

BTW, this is a separate can of worms, but from my research on homosexuality (I’m a mental health major) it is not contagious. Children raised by homosexual parents are not much more likely to be homosexual when they grow up than children raised by other parents.
Maybe so, but being homosexual isn’t the only way the child will lose their soul. There are other issues besides this that should raise red flags in this particular adoption situation. No one says that being adopted by homosexuals will make them homosexual. That’s really not the issue here. That’s not what makes it immoral.

I know that the passing on of homosexuality isn’t the main issue here, which is why I said “this is a separate can of worms”. I addressed the issue of what may make adoption by certain individuals in post 10, when I said:
When considering the morality of adoption, the question that should be asked is, “What’s best for the children?
That question can be changed to say:

What is the lesser of two evils (or least of several evils) for the children?

If you’re going to argue that homosexuals should never be allowed to adopt, then you must hold that there can be no greater evil for a child than to be adopted by homosexuals. Although I generally think adoptions by homosexuals should be avoided, it is at least sometimes a lesser evil than to be institutionalized. Institutionalized children have it much worse than virtually everyone.

Yes. The foster care system alone is horrendous. Kids get bounced around (especially older “problem children”) and at least 1 in 10 foster care homes is sexually abusive, probably much more. It is a well-known fact that kids who are sexually abused themselves often grow up to be abusers. So to RosaryFan, who states that being adopted by homosexuals puts the child’s soul at risk, please think of the consequences to that child’s soul if he/she is sexually abused for years.
