I guess I’m just looking for clarification on this topic before I have a conversation with someone. Is homosexuality and homosexual acts a sin that will be forgiven if someone goes to confession and repents?

Yes. All is forgivable except rejection of forgiveness itself. Homosexual attraction isn’t a sin, but is a blemish and disorder in a person. Homosexual sex is a sin, and is not always related to the disordered inclination.

Being homosexual is not a sin and does not require forgiveness.

The Catholic Church teaches that engaging in homosexual acts is a sin, and the level of sin depends on the usual factors (here, knowledge and intent would be key to determine the level of sinfulness).

But those acts are absolutely forgivable. The only unforgivable sin is despair, and that isn’t because of the sin itself; it’s because despair prevents you from accepting forgiveness.

Thank you! Yeah I know that being homosexual in itself isn’t a sin, I should’ve worded it better. Someone I know is calling Christians homophobic and I will obviously attempt to inform her more on what we believe so maybe we can have a better understanding of each other. thank you for your help

Homosexuality (attraction to ones own sex) isn’t a sin, and therefore outside of concepts like forgiveness.

Sexual activity outside of marriage is a sin, and can be repented of (in other words, a firm desire to change course), and forgiven

In the discussion, it helps to highlight the point that Christians are called to love our neighbour. If it happens that our neighbour is 2 men married to each other, you would be a good neighbour to them. You would be kind to them. Non-Christians seem to think that ‘you must hate them’. No. They are made in the image and likeness of God, as all of us are, from conception, which is why we never support abortion. Should we go around saying pro-abortion people are baby-phobes? That’s another argument but not really. The dignity of the human person is given by God.

Only a person who refuses to repent of mortal sin will be sent to hell.
Catechism of the Catholic Church: 1864

“Therefore I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven.” There are no limits to the mercy of God, but anyone who deliberately refuses to accept his mercy by repenting, rejects the forgiveness of his sins and the salvation offered by the Holy Spirit. Such hardness of heart can lead to final impenitence and eternal loss.

Here’s another angle when you’re having a discussion, when someone calls a group or person ‘homophobic’.
Is detraction a mortal sin?

According to J. Delaney of Catholic Encyclopedia, " Detraction in a general sense is a mortal sin , as being a violation of the virtue not only of charity but also of justice. … As in the case of stealing, detraction is a sin which demands restitution, even though rebuilding a victim’s reputation may be nearly impossible.

What is the difference between calumny and slander?

As nouns the difference between slander and calumny

is that slander is a false, malicious statement (spoken or published), especially one which is injurious to a person’s reputation; the making of such a statement while calumny is a falsification or misrepresentation intended to disparage or discredit another.

Yes, but but so is everything else, except the sin that Jesus said was not forgivable. That is the sin against the holy spirit.

“I tell you the truth, all the sins and blasphemies of men will be forgiven them. But whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven; he is guilty of an eternal sin.”

ALL sins are forgivable if someone sincerely repents and goes to Confession.
God’s mercy is greater than all our sins.

Honestly, this is because over the past 5 decades, MANY (if not most) Christians have become very leant with heterosexual mortal sins:
  • fornication
  • masturbation
  • co-habitation
  • divorce
  • and even adultery
If we don’t show equal outrage with heterosexual sins, it’s hard for people to see the difference.

To many people, sin is sin. Few people today understand why homosexuals sins are more immoral than heterosexual sins.

However, they do have a point - if we are accepting of heterosexual sexual sins, then it does make us hypocritical.

Your argument needs to be focused on ALL SEXUAL SIN is bad. Homosexual Acts can send one to hell just like adulterous relationships, masturbation, fornication, porn, etc. We need to show equal outrage to ALL these sins becoming normalized, not just homosexual sins.

I hope this is helpful
