Hunger strikes are not suicide. They are a form of self denial to bring attention to a specific situation. Are they morally right? Difficult to say and they depend on a case by case basis. For something to be morally right must be a right act, done with the right intention and under the right circumstances. Under some circumstances they are moral and in other cases they can be immoral.

yes if it is taken to the point of death it is suicide
it is also singularly ineffective in achieving political ends
 
to make a general statement about what constitutes suicide is not the same as condemning a particular person in a particular incident as a suicide. That is reserved for the Church, who generally takes a charitable view of such things.
 
The place and origin and history thereof are irrelevant if one is seeking Catholic teaching.

Intentionally causing one’s death by means of starvation is a grave matter.
 
Intentional death through self-imposed starvation is a sin against the 5th commandment.

Very well said. I agree you have to know Irish history to understand why these men went on hungerstrike. My father lived through the troubles in 1916. It gives me great peace of mind to know that it is not suacide.
