is it a mortal sin to get together with friends on the Sabbath?

So I was pretty much just wondering what exactly it means to observe the Sabbath. Would it be sinful of me to get together with friends to just chill out together or study? Also, my Dad works on Sunday. Is that a mortal sin? He doesn’t go to church; he was only baptized so he isn’t very religious. Thanks!
