Is it a sin not to attend church on Sunday?

Sounds to me like a good example of breaking the first commandment. “I don’t have to go to church because I don’t think it’s a sin.” Oh yeah? That may be what she says, but not what God says. Who gets to decide what’s a sin? You? Me? Seems to me that would be elevating myself to be like God. Isn’t that a breaking of the first commandment (I am the Lord thy God. Thou shalt not have strange gods before me.)? Isn’t that what Adam and Eve did? And brought original sin . . . from which we needed a savior?

To answer your question, yes, it is a mortal sin to miss Mass on Sunday or a Holy Day of Obligation. Get to confession. I believe this is the teaching of the Church. If I am wrong, someone please correct me. After all, I don’t get to decide, the Church does.
You miss Paul’s point about freedom completely. He says explicitly that there are those who value a particular day of the week, and those that dont. He NEVER says it is sinful not to honor a day of the week, but call it the freedom of Christ. Even Jesus states His real teaching regarding the Sabbath. He even spoke to what you are doing here, putting man’s rules before God’s teaching.

“yada, yada, yada” IMHO replaced “etc, etc, etc” because the English tongue and mentality has gotten lazy. Yada is much easier to say then etc.
I don’t think it’s laziness, more likely it simply became popularised after its use in the extremely successful TV show ‘Seinfeld’. That was where I first heard it.

She never went on any day as far as I know. She said you didn’t have to

It seems to me if she was so in love with Christ, she would have wanted to worship with others, not just listen to that Hagee person

SHe was very big about getting money as a blessing, and figured anyone that didn’t have enough wasn’t a true Christian…I have never heard such a terrible thing in my life

People would tell her pride was a sin, and she would just scoff at them…I guess everyone will go to heaven regardless of how they behave, if they claim they are saved…I don’t know what she thinks the final judgement is about, and why we will face it?..I guess she feels it’s just for other people, not the likes of her…

There was a minisiter that came on the board and told her she was wrong, and that she was completely, twisting scripture to suit her self, and giving a bad example…she was so nasty to the minister…The minister tried to gently tell her she wasn’t serving God and worded it very kind…she in return called them a liar…and attacked them in a most unChrist like way 😦

Most Protestant groups that I know of do have a selection of times to attend. Some attend on Wednesday and Sunday, typically. Some do not go on Sunday ever and only go on Saturday (that type is very, very keen on not missing, though). Smaller storefront churches may meet at only one time on a particular day, but as I drive around town I see that anyplace over a certain size has two time choices on Sunday listed in their display box.

They have the type that only shows up if the family makes them or it is Easter or something, just like we do. As I was raised, they seem less inclined to spend time in an airport between legs of a flight at a service than a Catholic is (I mean comparing between a Protestant who does go every Sunday and a Catholic who does go every Sunday) in order to attend on a Sunday while traveling. That could just be the particular mix of Protestants that I grew up around, though. It’s not like I haven’t seen chapels in airports for non-Catholics./QUOTE

Oh now the world is also full of Catholics who go to church only when Moma askes them or Christmas or Easter as well. As ( in my catholic days I did) So do not get the Idea that all catholic are filling the Pews. I was a C& E Catholic for forty years. Now as a Lutheran I attend each and every Sunday. Seeing as how the USA has 60 millon Catholics and 9 millon lutherans ( round numbers) I bet there are more catholics watching the early Football game rather than being in church. I should Know.!! I now watch Football after church My town has seven Lutheran churches and only two Cathoilc churches and on a percentage basis We got a beat on the attendance Thing So How do you like them apples ? I Am so sick and tired of this web site and all the time wasted reading some of these Posts " I Am a catholic and I am going straight to heavan and Prots are going to Purgatorty" what bunch of hoey. If any of you think I am going to Hell because I left the Rcc You are being Judgemental and I will save you a seat Oh I myay go to hell anyway but it will not for leaving the RCC. Some of you are going to be surprised who you see in heaven.

Who are you talking to? I didn’t see anyone say non Catholics are not going to heaven…I think this thread has gotten a bit off track…

🤷

Now the King in **the King and I would have been much less impressive had he adopted Yada, Yada, Yada. He made quite a ceremony of et cetera, et cetera, et cetera.

I think you misunderstood me. I am Catholic. I said they have certain folks like we do. They have people who don’t always come just like we have folks who don’t always come. That was a declaration on my part that Catholics don’t always go on Sunday. You appear to agree me on that point.

I have never stated on these boards or anywhere that just because someone is Catholic they will go to heaven. I don’t believe that, nor would I say it. A baptized Catholic can end up in hell. It is indeed possible. I do happen to agree with that bizarre scenario I gave in a previous post in a particular detail. A person ought not say to themselves that they will go to heaven simply because they have attended a number of religious services. There is no checklist somewhere that says if a person manages to drag themselves to a mass 200 or more times in their lifetime that this means they are home free after trip number 200. There is no such number, no such list.

Neither have I said that Protestants must go to Purgatory. I don’t believe that. I agree that we can’t point over at some person and say, “Look, they are going to hell (or wherever).” We can advise a person to consider certain actions based upon what they tell us, but we can’t see in their hearts.

Is a must for all Christ believers to go church on Sunday (unless you have serious hinder that prevent you from going) otherwise, we shouldn’t miss it…I always remembered how a non believer asked me this question “How come you never go church on sunday” when i backslided…i was like togue tight…coz it was extremely shameful being asked by non believer the reason behind…we don’t want to go church, mainly becoz we are LAZY and try to find excuses not to go…

well, scripture commands us to meet together for worship, and not to put it off.

Hebrews 10:25 (in context) urges Christians to not cease meeting together for edification, encouragement, and drawing near to God.

worshipping God and fellowshipping with the saints should never take a backseat to social engagements or work. we can find a million excuses, but they are just that- excuses.

and i’ve made them, too. 😦

The catholic church changed the sabbath: The Catholic Mirror of September 23, 1894, puts it this way: “The Catholic Church for over one thousand years before the existence of a Protestant by virtue of her divine mission, changed the day from Saturday to Sunday.”

Catholic Encyclopedia, Vol. 4, p. 153. “The church after changing the day of rest from the Jewish Sabbath or seventh-day of the week to the first, made the third commandment refer to Sunday as the day to be kept holy as the Lord’s day.”

“If Protestants would follow the Bible, they would worship God on the Sabbath Day. In keeping the Sunday they are following a law of the Catholic Church.” Albert Smith, Chancellor of the Archdiocese of Baltimore, replying for the Cardinal, in a letter dated February 10, 1920.

Catholic Press newspaper in Sidney, Australia. “Sunday is a Catholic institution and its claims to observance can be defended only on Catholic principles. From the beginning to end of Scripture there is not a single passage that warrants the transfer of weekly public worship from the last day of the week to the first.”

The Scripture NEVER gives authority to do this.

A lady I met on another forum knew scripture backward and forward…she has some ideas I found very different…one thing she claimed was it was not a sin to miss church on Sun…she would frequently go to plays ,and social events and not to church . She also spent a fortune on herself and always bragged it was God’s blessing that she had the money to do this

I always thought greed was one of the 7 deadly sins…she seemed to think that these kind of things never applied to those who were saved. She said Christ suffered all so all we need to do is to accept him and go our merry way

She said sins didn’t matter , they were all covered by Christ’s passion…It sounded to me like things a pagan would come out with…she always made fun of those who were regular church attenders saying a church won’t save you …yada. yada

I can’t see what good it does to accept Christ and then live like you never knew him?

I won’t mention the denomination she liked, because I don’t think it’s fair to assume others belonging to it were like her:confused:
I trhink she must belong to a cult or some thing, it not Christian

. . .

The Scripture NEVER gives authority to do this.
And I tell you, you are Peter, * and on this rock * I will build my church, and the powers of death * shall not prevail against it. 19* I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven."
Matthew 16:18-19
And he said to them, “The sabbath was made for man, not man for the sabbath; 28 so the Son of man is lord even of the sabbath.”
Mark 2:27
