Is it actually a sin for one to attend a wedding of a Catholic when one knows said wedding is invalid? If it is a sin, is it a mortal or venial sin? Is there an obligation to try to instruct and remind the bride and groom (Catholic) about the teachings of the Church? I am trying to figure out the right thing to do in our situation and to convince my hubby that we must say something out of charity and not just attend the wedding to attempt to keep what little peace exists.
Ideally, the bride and groom would listen and hear the teachings of the Church instead of being offended, and the groom could make a good confession and seek a Declaration of Nullity for his first marriage. If his first marriage would be declared null, then he and his fiancee would be free to seek a dispensation to marry in her church with a Catholic priest assisting at the wedding. If they would do this, their souls would not be in jeopardy and we could freely celebrate with them their marriage.
