Is it a sin to eat meat?

I stopped eating meat years ago after reading a few books on the modern meat-packing industry.

I tried twice to post this as a poll, not as a straight post. I wonder why it’s so difficult to post a poll?

Here are my poll options:
  1. YES - Because modern meat is highly polluted and damages your health by causing cancer, etc.
  2. YES - Because feeding animals 35 kg of grain (that could be eaten by humans) to produce 1 kg of meat is wasteful.
  3. YES - Because modern methods of raising animals seriously harm the environment.
  4. YES - Because factory farms are Satanic and cause incalculable suffering to animals.
  5. YES - Because Animals are God’s creatures which by their mere existence bless him and give him glory (CCC 2416) and not many humans do that any more.
  6. NO.

if your objection to meat rests on modern methods of factory farming, which lead to needless suffering for the animals, additions of hormones, antibiotics and stuff we should not be ingesting, tainted meat etc. then one solution is to eat meat from sources that avoid such production methods. Examples are texas grassfed beef, free range chickens raised on small farms (Amish for instance), hunted animals from certifed ranches etc.

Is it a sin to drink beer?

Is it a sin to drink wine?

Is it a sin to eat vegetables that have been tortured?
 
Absolutely not.

Meat is tasty. Meat is good! Meat is low carb!

If factory farms are your issue, then you should purchase meat from family farms. Family farm raised beef, for instance, does not use hormones, chemicals, general antibiotics, etc. Small butcher shops are very clean. Plus, it’s very economical to buy a whole cow from a local farmer and have it processed for you just the way you like.

As far as the grain issue – I personally don’t like to eat carbs. I’d much rather eat the meat.

Environmental – the earth is an amazing, resilant world.

God gave us animals to use and to EAT.

God showed Peter the animals of the world and specifically told him to “Kill and eat”

Eating meat is not specifically a sin. If you have problems with ‘factory farms’, why not eat range animals or hunted game?

Both of those were specifically allowed by God in Acts 10.
 
No it isn’t a sin… however, if your objection is to the cruelty, then just support organic groups…

The mere act of eating meat is not in and of itself sinful. Christ ate passover meal and help fishers catch fish (and not for the purpose of putting them in tanks with bubbling treasure chests and plastic scuba divers. 🙂 ) The question about the meat industry is certainly legitimate, but I not aware of a serious argument that Christians are bound to boycott the meat industry.

When Jesus prayed: “Father . . . let this CUP pass away from me”
(Matthew 26:39) there was no cup; he was speaking metaphorically.
He was referring to SUFFERING.

Similarly, when he told the Canaanite woman: “It is not fair to take the
children’s bread and to cast it to the DOGS” (Matthew 15:26), he wasn’t
talking about dogs, he was talking about PAGANS.

And it’s the same here. Peter’s vision in Acts 10:10-16 isn’t about
killing and eating ANIMALS, it’s about accepting and baptizing PAGANS.

CUP = SUFFERING
DOGS = PAGANS
ANIMALS = PAGANS

Get it?

My friend you are obviously a great human. But are you telling us that we should ‘Kill and Eat’ the Pagans?

It does not matter that it is metaphorical because Our Lord would not use a metaphor if its basis was an immoral act. Our Lord would not lie even in the context of a parable. Also, at best this only brings in the question of which animals to eat, not that all animals are off limits as is demonstrated by the fact that Our Lord ate passover lamb and help catch fish.

I think there is some validity in your choices 1 through 4. The way meat is produced in this country could use some improvement.

If the things you mention in choices 1 through 4 bother you, how about eating fish? Jesus:
  • Ate fish
  • Instructed his disciples to cath fish
  • Cooked fish
  • Miraculously produced fish
  • Instructed Peter to fish with a hook and a line
I was a vegetarian, too, for a while. I found myself craving fish. Considering the above points helped me to sort things out.

There is way too much gratuities slandering of the meat industry. many show articles and pictures of the same farmers doing wrong. If I showed you pictures of Catholics doing self flagellation without the appropriate description I could make the Catholic Church out to be an evil organization. We should really get some context with regards to the corporate farms, after all the corporate farms feed the world.
