Is it a sin to get a tattoo?

i was just wondering if it is a sin to get a tattoo as long as it doesnt depict anything vulgar or inappropriate. my parents tell me that it is a sin because it mutilates your body. i was just wondering what the church had to say about tattoos. thanks!!!
