Is it a sin to hear about sin? (please help/answer)

Look, OP, I know this is far far easier said than done being an OCD sufferer (albeit with obsessions unrelated to sin and such) myself, but please try to be at peace.

If you are seeing a confessor or spiritual director regularly, follow his guidance and continue to do so (and if you aren’t, start 🙂 ). Do what you can to dismiss scrupulous doubts. Spend some extra time in prayer.

I hope things go well. God bless.

Use common sense. If it was a sin to hear about sins, how on earth would the sacrament of confession work?

And just so we’re clear on my qualifications–I am a priest in good standing, ordained two years. I hold a Master of Arts degree in Theology with a concentration in Sacred Scripture, a Master of Divinity, a Bachelor of Sacred Theology, a Bachelor of Philosophy, and a Bachelor of Arts with a double concentration in Theology and Philosophy. I am currently a candidate for a Master of Science in Bioethics. So when I give you an answer about a moral question, I have some pretty decent backing for it. And if I’m giving you the wrong information, it’s on my soul, not yours.

Ambasea, you need to get off of here and stop asking questions on the forum. If you feel the need to ask questions, then write them down in a notebook and save it for when you meet with your priest and/or mental health professional. Asking questions on the forum is not going to be helpful to you.

If it were true, I wouldn’t be able to hear the confession of a murderer and absolve them.

I am not going to answer anymore. And others would be well advised to avoid doing so as well.

Please, everyone, let’s not further Ambasea’s worries by continuing the discussion.

The quote says “For we find it immoral”… so clearly this was something that the first Christians all collectively believed.

Also, the idea that “far be it from Christians to conceive of any such deeds [sins in general]” still really scares me. When I write my stories, I’m “conceiving” of what happens, including the sins. What are your thoughts on this?

…Actually, now that I remember, the part of the quote that says “far be it…” is actually from a different document where the Christian author is condemning the pagan entertainment for depicting sin . So would this 100% mean that it’s sinful to depict sin…?

A little advice from someone who suffers from scrupulosity. You’re never going to get a satisfactory answer on an Internet forum. Even when someone gives you a perfectly correct response, your mind will twist it in such a way that it does not seem to apply to you, and will only give rise to more questions which are even harder to answer satisfactorily. Ask your priest in person, and accept the answer that he gives you. This, combined with prayer and reception of the sacraments, is the only thing that will eventually help.

A Christian author is not a Church authority, they are simply expressing opinion. Read what edward_george said - how would a Priest be able to hear confessions or preach without discussing sin?

People, is best for this poster for us to stop addressing this thread and other threads like this.

Poster may not be willing to admit this so some tough love is necessary. Just stop cold turkey.

No he’s not right.
If something is causing you lack of peace then it is usually not right.

Hearing sins “passively” is definitely not a sin because if that was the case,Priests would be the biggest sinners because they hear people’s sins all the time in the confessional🙃.

What the author may have meant is perhaps something like if a man told his Christian friend that he had just murdered someone and the friend was just like indifferent and whatever, then that might be a sin.
It’s hard to tell without a link to the passage to see the context, but theoretically we can keep in mind that people many years ago life situations were different in the sense that they would have lived in closer quarters etc.

Also, please consider the option that the author could even be wrong.
Even people pronounced Saints by the Catholic Church sometimes believed certain things that most people (and the Catholic Church) would disagree with today.
Eg:I think it was St Augustine who thought that prostitution was a necessary evil.
