Is it a sin to not take your prescribed medication?

Yes it is a sin not to take ones medicine proscribed by ones doctor. If one believes the doctor is mistaken in his proscription, he should point out the error to his doctor, rather than taking it upon his own authority to dispense with his doctors order.

Suppose that the doctor says that you should be vaccinated. Why would it be a sin if you refuse because you don’t want cell lines from aborted fetuses floating around in your bloodstream? This can cause severe mental distress, knowing or having a doubt that there are these aborted fetuses which were used in the production of the vaccine and the cell lines from these abortions are now in your bloodstream. I don;t see why it would be a sin to refuse the doctor’s orders in cases such as this. How can you sleep at night thinking about these abortions and aborted tissues that are now injected into your bloodstream and they are now a permanent part of you.

bobzills (and others) ------- as an RN, a pro-life activist and concerned reader, I felt compelled to refute your idea of fetal cells being used to produce vaccines of any sort. Please read the article I have copied and pasted here.

And for my 2-cents worth, I do feel it is a “sin” to not take prescribed medication if the medicine is necessary to keep you from harimng yourself or others. But having said this, I realize many people would want to carry this argument further and say, “Well, is it a “sin” to refuse treatment or surgery for a condition or disease that is able to be cured? Don’t I have a “right” to refuse treatment I do not wish to take?” My own brother refused a second brain surgery after suffering through one for cancer. He chose palliative treatment and a concern for “quality of life” rather than “quantity of life”.

As for taking medication for the treatment of mental disorders, many people do not like the effect the meds have of “flattening out” their personality, etc. I believe it is a choice only you can make about how you wish to feel within your own skin…but if the refusal to take the medication would carry a potential of causing harm to yourself (suicide) or causing harm to another by physical abuse or psychological abuse, well…I think God would want you to use the wisdom and scientific advances of modern medicine to keep you feeling safe and keep those around you safe.

Holly - Have you spoken to your doctor about how you feel on the meds? If you have not, please do that…often there are other medications that can be substituted that may work better for you. Many medical conditions do not respond the best with the first prescribed medication course. I take three meds to control my high blood pressure, and it took three or four “tweakings” of the meds to get it right for me and also for my lifestyle.

If your doctor does not respond well to your concerns about your meds and your feelings, please seek out ANOTHER doctor. Particularly in the mental health field, a person must visit more than one doctor before finding one who “hits it off” well with you.

Blessings to you, Holly. You are in my prayers.

Vaccines DO NOT Contain Fetal Tissue
Dr. Jay L. Wile*

Of the many lies told by anti-vaccination advocates, this is one of the worst, because it hits on a real moral issue. However, anyone with a modicum of training in biology will tell you that it is impossible for vaccines (or any other injected medicine) to contain human tissue. The reason is simple: if you are injected with anything containing tissue from another person, your body will immediately recognize it as an invader and begin attacking it. This immune response is often quite radical and can easily lead to death! This is why blood from a donor to a recipient must be carefully matched before the recipient can receive it. Thus, there is no human tissue of any kind in vaccines. Unfortunately, the anti-vaccination movement (and even some naive pro- life groups) will try to convince the uninformed that vaccines contain tissue from aborted babies and that abortions must be continually done to supply this tissue to the “evil” drug companies. This is, of course, a bald-faced lie. Unfortunately, this lie is particularly evil, in that it targets a person’s morally correct view that abortion is murder.

For any lie to be successful, there must be a grain of truth in it. This lie is no exception. There is a tangential connection between some vaccines and abortion. The Hepatitis A vaccine, the MMR vaccine, and the chicken pox vaccine all contain viruses (weakened or inactivated) that were grown in human cells. A virus must be given a medium in which to propagate. Many vaccines use viruses that can propagate in several kinds of mammal cells, but some viruses are so specific that they can only propagate in human cells. The viruses used in the above-listed vaccines are that specific. Thus, they must be grown in human cells.

Where do the vaccine companies get the cells for these vaccines? They get them from companies like Coriell Cell Repositories, 403 Haddon Avenu, Camden, New Jersey 08103, 800-752-3805. This company has many cell lines, which are cultures of self-perpetuating cells. Each culture of cells is continually reproducing, making more cells. Those cells are sold to researchers, drug companies, and other medical technology firms. The specific cell lines used in vaccines are the MRC-5 and WI-38 cell lines1, and they have been supplying medical research of all types for more than 35 years. Where do these cell lines come from? That’s where the grain of truth in this lie comes from. Both of these cell lines were cultured from cells taken from two abortions, one (MRC-5) that was performed in September,19662 and one (WI-38) that was performed in July, 19623.

Now that you have learned the facts, we can discuss the moral issues involved. Is it immoral to use these cell lines to make vaccines? The answer is definitely not. You might think that the cell lines are somehow “tainted” because they come from abortions; however, think about it for a moment. Abortion is murder. A person who claims to be a physician purposefully kills an innocent, unprotected person. That is evil, and there is no doubt about it. However, let’s consider another murder, shall we? Let’s suppose one of your loved ones was shot in a robbery attempt. You rush your loved one to the hospital, but it is too late. Your loved one dies. This is another murder, and it is just as evil.

Suppose that the doctors rush in and tell you that there is a young boy in the next room who needs a heart immediately, or he will die. The doctors have analyzed your loved one’s blood and found that your loved one is a perfect match for the dying boy. Would you donate your loved one’s heart to the boy? I certainly would. It would be a tragedy that my loved one was murdered, but at least this would be a “silver lining” in that dark cloud. At least my loved one’s death would mean that a young boy could live.

The cells that were taken from the two aborted babies more than 35 years ago are much like my loved one’s heart. Two innocent babies were killed. However, they were able to donate something that has been used not only to make vaccines, but in many medical research projects over the years. Thus, these cells have been saving millions of lives for almost two generations! Although the babies were clearly murdered, the fact that their cells have been saving lives is at least a silver lining in the dark cloud of their tragic murder.

It is important to note that Federal law is quite specific in the matter of donated fetal tissue. The law does not allow for an abortion to be performed for the purpose of donating tissue, and the law even explicitly states that the abortion procedure cannot be changed in order to collect the tissue4. It also prohibits the baby’s family or the doctor from profiting from the donation5. Thus, these cells were truly donated, just as any organ might be donated. If a person is an organ donor and he or she is murdered, it is not immoral for you to use those organs. Once again, at least something good will come out of the murder if those organs are used.

Now that you know the facts, you can see why I consider this lie so devious. Anti-vaccination advocates play on a person’s proper moral indignation about abortion, claiming that if a person gets vaccinated, he or she is supporting the abortion industry. Of course, nothing could be further from the truth. Whether or not you get vaccinated, the same number of abortions will be performed, as abortions are not necessary to make new vaccines. In addition, you are actually dishonoring the memories of those two precious babies if you refuse vaccination, because you are refusing the one good thing that has come from their murder. At the same time, you are putting your life and the lives of your loved ones in jeopardy by refusing one of the greatest protections that medicine has ever developed! How could anyone call himself pro-life if he dishonors the memory of those who have been murdered while risking the lives of those he loves?

Interestingly enough, a June 9, 2005 statement from the Pontifical Academy for Life (the Vatican’s official voice in the area of abortion/right-to-life) comes to essentially the same conclusion. Even though some organizations have mischaracterized the document as condemning the use of such vaccines6, the document, in fact, says quite the opposite. It says that when an alternative vaccine which has no connection whatsoever to abortion is available, parents should use it. There is no question that this is the moral thing to do. In addition, when there is no alternative available, parents should object by demonstration, etc. so as to force manufactures to come up with an alternative.

However, as for actually using the vaccines that have no alternatives, the document clearly says that parents can do so in order to protect their children and the community. The English translation of the document (originally written in Italian) says, "As regards the vaccines without an alternative, the need to contest so that others may be prepared must be reaffirmed, as should be the lawfulness of using the former in the meantime insomuch as is necessary in order to avoid a serious risk not only for one’s own children but also, and perhaps more specifically, for the health conditions of the population as a whole—especially for pregnant women."7 Note what this official Roman Catholic document says. It says that parents should CONTEST the vaccines so as to force the manufactures to find new ways to make them, but UNTIL THAT HAPPENS, parents can still use the vaccines that have no alternative, because it will allow them to avoid serious risk to their children, and more importantly, to the population as a whole. The moral good done by the vaccine, then, outweighs any moral evil when it comes to actually USING the vaccine. The statement clearly says the MAKING of the vaccine is bad, but the USE of it is not. In fact, the document specifically mentions rubella as something that should be vaccinated against, even though there is no alternative vaccine—"Moreover, we find, in such a case, a proportional reason, in order to accept the use of these vaccines in the presence of the danger of favouring the spread of the pathological agent, due to the lack of vaccination of children. This is particularly true in the case of vaccination against German measles."7

Because some organizations have tried to mischaracterize this statement, the Catholic News Service (CNS) produced an article that quotes Msgr. Jacques Suaudeau, a medical doctor and official at the Pontifical Academy for Life, as saying, “If the health of the child or of the whole population [is at risk], the parents should accept having their kid be vaccinated if there is no alternative.” 8 Because some organizations clearly do not like the Roman Catholic church officially saying that the use of these vaccines is morally acceptable, they have asked the Pontifical Academy for Life to change its statement. However, CNS reports that Msgr. Jacques Suaudeau said the document “could not be changed” because it accurately reflected church teaching.8 Despite what you might read, then, even the Vatican supports the use of vaccines that have a tangential relationship to abortion, as long as no alternative vaccines are available.

Take the meds no matter how sucky they are… BUT always talk with your doctor about the side effects and how they make you feel especially if they are making you feel shutdown or unable to function. Sometimes after taking the meds for a few week/months the side effects fade or disappear.

I have suffered from severe depression with psychotic features(delusions) and severe (SEVERE) suicidal ideation and was eventually dx as bipolar (even tho I almost never had the happy manias, mixed states tho- bleech). After over a decade plus of meds and their horrific side effects I am now stable and, gasp, taking min. meds.(still can’t read worth a darn, but hey, trade-offs) If you are ever feeling suicidal take the meds, tell the doc… if you are not seeing a psychiatrist then see one or have your prescribing doc consult regularly with one. The medicines are necessary to stop the kindling effect of the imbalances in your brain(longer you go without meds the easier it is for your brain to rewire itself into a bad loop simple man’s explanation, and then it has to be rewired thru the meds to a good chemical loop) and sadly it took years to fry the brain to where it is now and it takes years to get it back to a semi state of normalcy.

A great way to “deal” with it in the meantime and through the suicidal misery is to not dwell on the images/thoughts, rather force yourself to focus on another subject even if it is watching Sponge Bob on the TV or staring out the window at the trees and sky. Prayer works great, when it seems so dark and frustrating unite yourself with Jesus and His suffering in the Garden= His time of great depression. Offer the mental agony up to Him for healing, or at least a rest from the inner turmoil. Talk with our Blessed Mother Mary, she will listen and help you and hold you. The main thing is to try and stop blaming everybody outside and even yourself for your problems and to pray and be proactive. The problems are what they are and in the past, focus on the NOW and maybe a weee bit in the future. Makes life easier. Take the meds, do something nice for yourself everyday even if it to wash your hair, a song that makes you feel better inside or have something special to eat. Take the meds and go to Mass as often as you can handle going outside the house, or Eucharistic Adoration (sometimes easier with fewer people and no social interaction). Allow silence to surround you with prayer and nature’s beauty. Oh and did I mention take your meds? LOL!

Seriously take them and always tell your doc the side effects or what you don’t like about A, B C combo. It can take several years to get the right cocktail, and even then sometimes you stop responding to some meds and have to change them up. Focus on the side effects that effect your mind, social interaction, and energy levels if possible first. Then lastly on the side effects that are less critical to your mental health,i.e. weight gain(LOL I still gotta spare waay too many pounds to lose-UGH! But the mind is quiet and moods “normal”). If the pdoc sees you are working hard to work with him/her and are taking your meds and being responsible in fighting/reporting the suicidalness and other problems they will work even harder with you. LOL, nothing makes a shrinks day more then knowing the patient is actually taking the meds as prescribed. (LOL, so be kind to your doc the next time ya see 'im and shock 'im with compliance! Plus a nice lil practice on the whole obediance thingy especially since the pay off is for your own ling term good)

You don’t know me from Adam but trust me when I say I have crawled those darkest recesses of the soul and mind and only came out of them once I stopped thinking about “me” and started listening to the doc, taking the icky meds, and trusting that Jesus is teaching/pruning me through this experience for a reason. And altho 10 years ago I would have called you a silly idiot if you gave me the same advice I gave you above, I was humbled loving by Jesus and am finally healed and the experiences from those times have made me a better person and more appreciative of the times I am now in…humbled, but stronger and never forgetting what it is like to walk the halls of suicidal depression that most normal people don’t have a clue about the depths it invades the marrow of being. Be patient (even if you get sick of hearing that word-I know I did) , be strong( tell yourself over and over that God has a plan for you and He will only allow me to suffer this because good will come from it- and good will come from it look at how you have learned empathy with Jesus in the Garden if nothing else for now!)

Pray and trust in Jesus and Mary! IT WILL GET BETTER!!! (But ya gotta take the meds- even if they suck)

((hugs)) and you are not alone! And it really, honestly does get better take it from one who has been there and knows the unspoken darkness.

I am not a docotr or mental health professional, nor do I play one on TV so please run all stuff through your doctors and therapist first. Just an idiot who is offering some first hand advice based on my own experiences. Peace be with you!!!

The Catholic viewpoint should be discussed:
Aborted Fetal Cell Line Vaccines And The Catholic Family
A Moral and Historical Perspective
cogforlife.org/fetalvaccinetruth.htm

"The evidence supporting the direct link between the abortions and the production of ensuing vaccines are unmistakable. "

"And from a clinical standpoint, according to Dr. C. Ward Kischer, PhD one of the leading authorities in the nation on human embryology, the abortion must be pre-arranged in order to have researchers available to immediately preserve the tissue.

“In order to sustain 95% of the cells, the live tissue would need to be preserved within 5 minutes of the abortion”, stated Dr. Kischer. “Within an hour the cells would continue to deteriorate, rendering the specimens useless.”
"

“As parents strongly opposed to abortion my husband and I were very concerned to learn that many childhood vaccines are manufactured from the cell lines of aborted babies.”
“Some common vaccines, including the rubella component of all MMR vaccines worldwide except Japan, are produced from cell lines produced from the tissue of aborted babies. Two cell lines commonly used are MRC5 (Medical Research Council 5) and WI-38 (Wistar Institute 38). MRC5 originates from the lung tissue taken from a 14 week male fetus aborted for “psychiatric reasons” from a 27 year old woman in the UK in the 1970s. WI -38 originates from a female fetus aborted for “psychiatric reasons” in the 1960s.”

I don;t know about you, but I am distressed to know that vaccines derived from aborted fetuses are running around in my blood stream. My personal opinion is that it would not be a sin to refuse medication that you know is derived from aborted fetuses. Further, I think that people in the USA are taking too many medications and that the drug companies are creating a hysteria scaring people into taking all these medications. Too many drugs is not going to do you any good since they all have side effects, and in the end these side effects will in some cases come back to bite you. In some cases, you can go with natural alternatives which will not harm the body as much.

As a psychiatrist, I can only urge you to talk to your doctor. You may be experiencing side effects that can be avoided by changing your medication, or your dosage.

There are a lot of medications out there, and you have to find the right one for each person - and very often you don’t know in advance what will fit. Your doctor needs your (name removed by moderator)ut to be able to help you. I know for me, it’s the most helpful thing when my patients observe the effects and side effects, so we can find the right treatment together.

If you feel that your doctor is unwilling to listen to you, please go look for another one! You deserve to be listened to and to get the best help that’s out there.

I haven’t read every entry, but having barely survived my son’s bout of major depression (and several bad diagnoses along the way), I know how difficult it can be to take these types of medications. Some of them make you feel so bad, that you start to think being sick is better. This is no comparison to what you’re taking, but I used to take something for migraines that made me feel so terrible that I’d rather sufffer through the migraine for 3 days than endure the few hours of misery the pill caused.

I don’t think it’s a sin of any kind. If you’re worried about it though, the best thing would be to talk to the priest in confession, or even make an appointment to see him so you have time without other people having to wait.

And please talk to your doctors about the effect these things have on you. Maybe they can rearrange dosages, or give you a different combination or some other solution, but it’s really important to not just give up on them.

Holly, please take your meds!!
I know how you feel, I have to take all kinds of pills for all knids of things, and I hate it…but I hate the way I felt before I broke down, & began to take them on a regular basis.
If you are getting really horrid side-effects, talk to your doctor. S/he may be able to fine-tune the dosages for you.
But I believe we have a responsibility to take care of our selves the best that we can. And when we are talking about mood-altering meds, the person taking them is NOT the best judge of what we need & how much. Because when we are off them, we aren’t thinking clearly…which is:) why we are supposed to be taking them!!

Another point, and this is something my best friend, a nurse, told me: When we stop taking a medicine, we have to re-adjust to it all over again when we go back on it. And sometimes, being off it just a short while makes it that much harder to get ourselves righted around again when we start up again.
So talk to your doctor, but don’t stop taking the meds.

Hi everyone. I believe I started a similar thread a while back but I did a search for it and couldn’t find it. Anyway, I take anti-depressants and anti-psychotics because I have three mental disorders: major depression (with psychotic features), borderline personality disorder, and adult ADHD. I can become very depressed and sometimes even suicidal if I do not take my medicine. However, I hate taking my medicine. So I ask, is it a sin to skip taking my medicine? 🤷
I think you are very fortunate to be living in a time when these medicines are available to you. You are a source of inspiration to others who might have the same conditions. They see you and how well you do on the meds and are inspired same. You know can live a fruitful life.

Imagine someone dedicating his life to find the right blend of chemicals so you may enjoy the life God gave you. The scientist’s knowledge was given to him by God.

We all hate doing something. But we all have to do it if we want to improve our lives.

Alcholics and drug addicts have to their addictions up in order to survive. There is no pill for them. Same for people who must battle morbid obesity or just plain obesity. No pills for them either.

Offer it up. When you got them in your hand, say a little prayer of thanks. Then see them as tiny crosses which you must carry.

=Holly3278;5285033]Hmm, ok. I think that taking medication would count as reasonable care as well. So I guess maybe it is a sin to not take my medicine.
Oh and don’t worry, I took my medicine already earlier today. 😛
Thank God!

I think each case would have to be decided on the evidence for “not taking” meds. For example, cost prohibitive, nasty side effects, effectiveness of the meds, are all factors.

Certainly any voluntary reduction of medications that could be life threatening is akin to suicide, and therefore sinful. Possibly even Gravely sinful.

Love and prayers, and please keep taking your meds.

There is also a very interesting and effective process for releasing the underlying emotional components of many stress scenarios including physical and mental disorders.

It’s called EFT (“Emotional Freedom Techniques”).

You can use this technique on your issues about taking your medication.
Even better would be to use it on all the issues your medication is prescribed to address.

It won’t interfere with your regular medical treatment and costs nothing to use on your own.
(You can find health care practitioners and therapists versed in this technique if you prefer to get expert guidance, but it’s not necessary).

A free PDF file instruction manual is available for free download at emofree.com/downloadeftmanual.asp

The shortcut to get started is just finding the “Basic Recipe” somewhere around p20 or so.
You don’t need to know all the theory to start benefiting.

Hi Holly,

I take a lot of medications also, not like yours, but still they keep me going. I would sometimes just like to stop also, but the consequences would be so much worse. So keep taking the medicine. The advice that if you take it now, it could be decreased at some point is true.

I will pray for you!🙂
