I would imagine it could be done for a health reason unrelated to pregnancy prevention, although I am not a doctor and don’t know what that reason might be.

It shouldn’t be done for pregnancy prevention. As others have said it does not create impotence or lack of libido, since if it did, men who are trying to find a way to have sex without creating babies would not be having the operation.

I’m not sure if a vasectomy would be considered “self-mutilation” if the man later wished to enter the clergy (which could potentially keep him from being admitted). The priests on this forum would know better than me.

You never know! You should always leave yourself open and able to father children.

Even priests leave their ministry at times, to get married!

Mutilating your body so you can’t ever have children can’t be good. Unless it’s a life threatening situation…protect life at all costs!

Direct sterilization is morally unacceptable. It is mutilation.

CIC
Canon 1041 The following are irregular for receiving orders: …
/5 a person who has mutilated himself or another gravely and maliciously or who has attempted suicide;
Catechism
2399 The regulation of births represents one of the aspects of responsible fatherhood and motherhood. Legitimate intentions on the part of the spouses do not justify recourse to morally unacceptable means (for example, direct sterilization or contraception).

@LawyersGunsAndMoney This is just a hypothetical I promise.
@CCHcolonel This is a hypothetical first off, second off avoiding sin using weird means. Again, hypothetical.

@camoderator I think things are done here. The CCC has been cited. All things have been said.
