Our human wisdom is nothing, God’s wisdom is everything! God counts it as mortal sin if you willfully look at others with lust, knowing how seriously he takes it. The sin is in the objectification of others, converting them into tools for your pleasure, whether you do it in the secrecy of your heart where only God sees it or act it out in the open. The heart of it is in the devaluation of one that’s got immeasurable worth in himself in God’s eyes. That’s the sin of lust- not just physically dong things you’re not supposed to do. All sin is more or less serious depending on how much it harms Charity- Love. Some is obvious to us by use of reason, some not- but Christ has made it clear to us that lust and hate of others is always seriously contrary to charity whether we do it in the heart or in the body.

if i committ adultery in my heart i can confess it and no one’s hurt.

if i REALLY commit adultery many can be hurt.and it manifests MUCH less control and respect than just thinking.

The thoughts are different in their effects (others being hurt) but not in their essential sinfulness.
In both cases, the Lust toward the woman or Hate toward “that guy”, if embraced and not resisted, are mortal sins for they “kill charity” in the heart.

I can’t remember the specific location but in another passage, Jesus is speaking about how what goes into the mouth makes no one impure. He makes the statement that it is what is in the heart that is important. For from the heart comes, hatred and lust and blasphemy and the other sins…Jesus declares that is is what comes from the heart - what is in the heart that makes a man unclean…

No act, whether it be murder or rape or whatever, occurs in the physical without first occurring in the heart. THAT is where the sin begins and that is where we must fight the sin and the temptation to sin…

OK - thinking, and embracing, evil thoughts are not as bad as actually carrying them out…But they are both mortal sin.

Indeed the effects of Hitler’s hatred would have been lessened, but his sin would have been just as great and just as mortal/deadly to his soul.

Depends. Are you just venting or do you actually mean harm to the man? Even if you don’t mean to do harm to him yourself, but you really wish in your heart that he would come to some serious harm without cause, wanting him to die, suffer some terrible calamity or illness etc- That is hate- And yes, it is mortal sin. Meaning that if you willfully do it and die unrepentant you will destroy charity in your heart (aka send the indwelling Blessed Trinity packing) separating yourself from God and killing your soul. Dying in this state is disastrous. :sad_yes:

That’s the lie- Of course someone is hurt! For one- YOU are hurt, your soul is hurt very badly that it would be unrecognizable if you could see it- deformed. Also, the other persons will be hurt. Because failing to love them will affect how you treat them- it’s impossible to treat others as God wants if we don’t love them first. If you see someone as a pleasure tool or an object of hate, it’s impossible to do right by them, no matter how much you convince yourself you can- it’ll affect your behavior towards them.

And yes, physical actions do hurt others, but that doesn’t take away from the evil of the sin of the heart- it only aggravates an already evil thing. It proves how adamant the person is in his sin, how much he has really embraced it

It is a sin, but you can kick the habit! Just focus on things that are more important to you and of course, God. There is nothing you cant get through in life, you just need to accept God and he will lead the way for you, you just have to make sure you meet Him halfway and concentrate on things that are better for you. For example, you can pick up reading more books, or you could focus on healthier living, etc.

Trust me, you can get through this, I’ve gotten through it and I am one happy 21 year old. It’s definitely worth it! You’ll be a lot happier.
