A recent survey from the American Psychological Association found that, for many Americans, “news consumption has a downside.”

More than half of Americans say the news causes them stress, and many report feeling anxiety, fatigue or sleep loss as a result, the survey shows. Yet one in 10 adults checks the news every hour, and fully 20% of Americans report “constantly” monitoring their social media feeds—which often exposes them to the latest news headlines, whether they like it or not…

I stopped checking the news daily when I stopped
watching TV regularly.

First of all, it’s not really news. It’s ‘entertainment’. It’s designed to get people’s blood going. It’s almost like a drug in it’s capacity. It reminds me of RJ Reynolds’ nicotine delivery system. Except it’s a designed adrenaline delivery system. Yea, stay away from it.

Yes it’s designed that way, shocking news keeps you returning to the web site. Definitely bad for you.

I stopped doing it and it has helped reduce my overall worries and negative feelings about our world.

I knew someone forty years ago who stopped buying the newspapers for the same reason, their mood lifted and they emigrated to Canada. Though those two things may not be connected.

Most likely, yes.

Attention spans shrink as we tend to ping between stories that catch our 'interest"
Curiosity in fact is a VICE. The virtue, known as “studiosity” (not well known) is the VIRTUE (enabling a person to go to depth on some topic, not skating across the surface of headlines).

Keeping up with the news is going to spark negative emotions from time to time: it’s just a fact of life. That doesn’t mean it’s “bad” for us. We have to be aware of what’s going on in the world.

Stay woke, fam.

I’ve been cutting back over the past few days. I don’t know everything that’s going on but feel better. The news tends to irritate me.

It is quite necessary to keep up on Catholic news to understand the spiritual warfare that is taking place with the attack on the family.

You need to step back from world affairs or you will drive yourself crazy.

Constantly = bad

Nightly news = reasonable to stay informed
