Is it disrespectful to say to Jesus, "Hey dude, that was a great day man!"

Sometimes I go overboard and I tend to forget that Jesus is God and talk to him more like a friend. Is it disrespectful? Sometimes, I do that with God the Father as well.
 
Do you talk to your parents, your grandparents that way?

If you yourself is a parent, do you like your child talk to you that way?

As an adult, no. But as a very young child, perhaps yes. And God wants us to approach him like children, doesn’t he?
 
The Lord is our life-long True Best Friend, because He loves us so unconditionally! But think of all He has given for us- wouldn’t you be reverent of anyone who would give so much for you?

I am not sure where the Church stands on this, but it is my advice to always err on the side of formality as it is often interpreted as respect.

(But for the PP who asked if one would refer to their parents as “Dude”… I for one indeed do on occasion. My respect for them is more than shown through my devotion to our family unit and my willingness to sacrifice for their benefit- not to mention obey them! And this is coming from a convert from a non-religious family, even when it hurt to wait to convert for their personal comfort, to allow them time to adjust, I did. Words like “Dude” are not always indicitive of your level of respect, rather of your comfort level with whom you’re speaking with. However, the Lord and how we speak to him may be a completely different matter)
 
Being from Southern California… and having grown up in the “surf culture” of the 1960’s-70’s (Beach Boys… et al)… the caption of this thread caught my eye.

Maybe it would help the OP if he/she knows the meaning of the word “dude”. “Dude” is a derivitive of the word “dandy”. The meaning of the word “dandy” is as follows:

“a man who pays excessive attention to the smartness of his appearance” (Oxford Dictionary).

Is that really a term anyone would apply so casually to the Son of God and Redeemer of the World? I think the advice to stick with the “formal” was good. I would push that a step further, and go with the Reverent title… Our Lord… My Lord… etc. God bless.

Who’s going to teach their kids to call them “Dude”?
We approach God with a childlike heart but not with a wild manner and/or disrepestful kid.
 
I don’t call Him “Dude,” but I do sometimes call Him “Boss,” as in, “Okay, Boss, what should I do about…?”

After all, that’s basically what “Lord” means.

St. Teresa of Avila is said to have prayed, after her carriage had overturned dumping her in the mud, „Lord, if that‘s how you treat your friends, it‘s no wonder you have so few of them!“

The Psalmists and prophets didn‘t always edit their prayers for liturgical correctness either. Didn‘t Jeremiah once pray, „Lord, you have duped me, and I have been your dupe“?

Ideally, when we pray, all that we are will be able, in different ways at different times, to interact with all that God is in relation to us – King, Father, Rescuer, Brother, Friend.
 
If you are unsure, maybe follow your heart and stop. If not, I’m sure He doesn’t mind as long as you follow Him. Don’t get too scrupulous. 😛
