Is it ever permissible for a member of the faithful to self-communicate the Eucharist (minister holds out pyx or paten containing hosts for the laity to pick up and then consume)?
In discussing Communion procedures for those with gluten intolerance, the argument was made that yes, a member of the faithful can pick up their own low-gluten host from the minister’s paten and commune. This is due to residue of the regular hosts still being on the minister’s hands and “protects” the communicant from consuming gluten residue.
My argument is that because the Eucharist is a gift, it can only be given to a member of the faithful; it must never be “taken.” I would think that if a communicant is that sensitive to residue from regular hosts, he/she should probably not be receiving a low-gluten host anyway; only the Precious Blood should be consumed.
Which is correct? Is there a paragraph in the GIRM regarding receiving the host as opposed to taking it for oneself?
