Is it God speaking, or just our imagination?

I have always wondered how a person can know that God is genuinely speaking to them, or whether a person may only think God is speaking to them?
I certainly believe that God can speak to a person’s soul (as opposed to an out-and-out apparition, which is an extreme rarity). But I know that imagination can be very powerful. Somewhere there is a border between these two conditions, and I wonder whether somebody out there can speak to that.

Wow! this is a hard one to answer.

If we all knew this, there would not be so many different religions and heresies where they all claim “God is telling me to do this”…

I think the best way to know God is talking to you is to read what the saints write and try to learn from them. I have a hard time discerning it myself and it would help to find more writings on how exactly to know the answer to this…perhaps it comes with time and “practice”
Praying for the Help of the Holy Spirit would probably be the best way to recieve this gift.

I agree with Flick about reading what the saints have written and praying to the Holy Spirit. It’s good to have a strong knowledge about the Bible. I think it’s also very helpful to have a spiritual director for guidance in a situation like this. God speaks to us in many ways. I would probably ask God for a sign of some sort to let me know what His will was in regards to whatever he said.

Pray for wisdom!

To answer this we need only think of the disciples on the road to Emmaus. SA Jesus was speaking with them “something prevented them from recognising Him” However they did say to each other after they had recognised Him after the breaking of the bread “Did not our hearts burn within us as he explained the scriptures to us as we walked along the road?”

Nothing changes. When God is in communcation with us we too experience this burning of our hearts. no words can explain it to you but I have experienced it many times.

When we realise that then our eyes will be opened and we will recognise Him.
