Is it improper to genuflect in the absence of the Blessed Sacrament?

Hi there. I often attend daily Mass at a neighoring parish. It is usually celebrated in their side chapel, which is a completely separate room from the main sanctuary. There is no tabernacle there. Even so, everyone genuflects to the altar as they enter. It seems that a bow to the altar or crucifix would be more appropriate. Is genuflection improper in this case?
 
Dear C,

The genuflection is reserved for the Blessed Sacrament and for the cross in the liturgical celebration of Good Friday. The deep bow is made to the altar by all who enter or leave or pass before it.
