Hello to all!
I had an interesting (but definitely not threatening in any way from either party) discussion with my non-denom friend. I want to go see Paranormal Activity 2. She said that she would not want to see it because it goes against Scripture:
Deut. 18:10-14, “There shall not be found among you anyone who makes his son or his daughter pass through the fire, one who uses divination, one who practices witchcraft, or one who interprets omens, or a sorcerer, 11or one who casts a spell, or a medium, or a spiritist, or one who calls up the dead. 12“For whoever does these things is detestable to the Lord; and because of these detestable things the Lord your God will drive them out before you. 13“You shall be blameless before the Lord your God. 14“For those nations, which you shall dispossess, listen to those who practice witchcraft and to diviners, but as for you, the Lord your God has not allowed you to do so."
I know it’s not exactly relevant, but I think her translation (If only there weren’t so many…
) said not to associate with any of those things.
Well of course, do not associate with those. Don’t even DABBLE.
However, I tried to explain to her that the movie doesn’t promote demonic possession, but rather just provide a fictional account of it. Then we got into reasons of sin (what makes a sin a sin, effect of intent, etc…) and that led to a full hour of discussion itself…but it was awesome. haha. But again, she said that for her sake, she wouldn’t endorse a movie that “endorses” demonic possession because the Bible says not to even associate with those. She even invoked the old “Would Jesus go watch that movie?” which is technically valid…but Jesus also wouldn’t kill someone; however, a human can morally kill someone [the subject’s kinda touchy here…] if it is out of pure self defense and there is absolutely no other viable option.
So as long as I am not going to watch the movie to see humans be tortured by demons and am not looking to recieve any physical pleasure from the movie, other than getting an adrenaline rush, is it morally licit to see Paranormal Activity 2 (Or I guess even the first one which I love…haha).
