I have a 2 year old rough collie named Wendy she now leaves her puppies all day and only spends a few minutes with them they are 6 weeks old and eating canned and dry food (3 times a day) Wendy’s milk does seem like it’s drying up does anyone here have any experience with nursing dogs this is Wendy’s first litter and at first she was a great mother but now I rarely see her going in the dog house to her puppies she just plays around the farm with the other dogs and sometimes even sleeps in a separate dog house from the puppies

You might want to search on an animal website. Or google the question if you are looking for an answer.

Regardless of whether it turns out to be normal or not, please take mother and puppies to your vet so they can be checked out.

Hi Rosie, it sounds like Wendy knows she has done her job…I had three generations of Springer Spaniels and I learned so much. The mother will stay with them continuously through the first three weeks, nursing them and only leaving them when she needs to go out or when she eats. If you look at her she is raw from them nursing and scratching her…Beginning at three weeks old their eyes start to open and their ears, and they become a little bit independent, but mom has to round them up., she still nursing and will stay with the pups but a little less. They should be little butter balls by 6 weeks old.and should not be nursing anymore. Mom will check on them, she knows their hers.but her job is over and she will go back to being Wendy…At 6 weeks you can put them up for adoption. You should have mom checked by a vet now and the pups inoculated I hope each pup finds a good home…God bless

The vet told me 8 weeks before they can leave and whenever she checks on them they try to nurse why is this?

And best not to give them away until they’re 12 weeks. Let people select the puppy they want. But don’t separate them until they’re 12 weeks. Better for mother and pups.

But the vet said 8 weeks?? They’ve already have there first vaccinations and will be getting the second and a microchip at 8 weeks ready for there new homes

You should follow your vets advice. He knows the mom, he has seen the puppies. we have not.

I hope you find happiness in your life you seem so stern god bless you x

What an odd comment to make Rosie. Rest assured, I will no longer answer your threads.

Yes, your vet said 8 weeks before putting them up for adoption. She or he was giving you an estimate. What that means is people can pick the one they want at 8 weeks. But the norm for actually giving them to their new owners is 12 weeks.

I’m sorry if you took offence I didn’t mean it in that way you’re more than welcome to answer my threads god bless xx

I know what you mean, Rosie. It’s so easy to get attached to them. I wish we had more dogs and cats. They are so much fun. And there’s nothing like puppy and kitten breath to start and end each day. 😄
