In Europe there is the Tradition of a carnival. It is similar to Halloween in the sense that we dress up, but different because they are not scary, but happy costumes and it is an event of joy.
Would you find it offensive for someone to dress up as a cleric? Not to make fun of the cleric, but in celebration. They say with reason that imitation is the highest form of flattery.
So my question to you is: How would you react and would you find it disrespectful if someone dressed up as a cleric, for example as a bishop or cardinal? And how would you feel if someone dressed as Jesus or a Saint?
Thank you in advance for your answers.

I would find it weird, to be honest

I find people dressing up as people from other cultures (including religion) for Halloween distasteful in general though. The whole ‘cultures aren’t costume’ thing.

I don’t know about your traditions, but if someone dressed as a specific character who’s a cleric, I personally wouldn’t care about it at all.

I think Saints are a different matter from dressing as a priest because you would be dressing up as a certain somebody. So I wouldn’t think much if someone dressed as the Joan of Arc.

Edit: jesus is a no go, unless you’re acting, lol

Thank you for your answer.

I just wanted to add, that in Austria, where I live, almost everyone is Roman Catholic. Catholicism is part of our tradition and so is the church. So I guess one wouldn’t be dressing up as someone from a different culture.

I think the purpose would clearly be to caricature the church. How would you feel if you saw someone dressed as Christ crucified, wearing a crown of plastic thorns and his face caked with fake blood?

I guess that changes the context slightly, but clerics are a specific subset in the culture. You can easily tell because you’re not saying that one is dressing up as Catholic, but as a cleric.

I’m sure intention is the most important aspect, so I’m not sure if there’s a correct answer.

Dressing as Jesus is a little iffy because if you run around looking like Jesus, you better be behaving like Jesus. I know there are some performance artists in major cities of USA who dress up like Jesus and go walk around in the streets. I think that’s fine as long as they keep up the persona and don’t get arrested or cuss someone out or get drunk or otherwise be irreverent and un-Jesuslike while they’re being Jesus.

I’m more comfortable with the idea of people dressing as clerics or saints, although one has to be careful not to appear disrespectful of them either. Like if you’re dressed like a priest you don’t want to be giving your girlfriend a big smooch in public. And if you’re a woman and dress like a priest, that’s a whole can of worms you’re opening, although I note that men seem to be able to dress up as nuns without evoking anything more than mild amusement.
