I was taught a long time ago presuming that a soul was in heaven or hell was a mortal sin, judgement (that only God can do that), so since John Paul II is not a Saint or a Blessed (yet), Is it wrong to ask his intercession? He was very important to me and I want to pray and ask his intercession but I’m just not sure if it is ok or not.

Dear Dave,

Many times in history, a saint was considered to be holy by the grass roots faithful who often flocked to their tombs to pray to them. So many of their prayers were answered, that it occasioned the formal process of canonization, and ultimately sainthood.

We can recall how this happened quickly for St. Therese, LIttle Flower of Jesus, when her autobiography began to be circulated by the Carmelite sisters.

Have no fear to pray to our beloved Pope, for I trust it is the Holy Spirit who moves you to do so with wonderful confidence and trust in John Paul’s intercession. I doubt it will be very long before he is declared blessed, for the process has already begun.

Think this one through a moment. A person is declared blessed, and later a saint, when miracles are attributed to their interecession. If no one ever prayed for their intercession, these miracles would never occur, and there would never be any beatifications or canonizations!

Asking for someone’s intercession, even if we don’t know for sure if they’re in heaven yet, is not presumptious. It is trusting in God’s love and mercy.

So how would you ask for his intercession? Is there a particular prayer, or just tell him for what you need help with?

Unlike being in the Vatican, where you couldn’t speak with him without a private audience, his spirit now lives and is able to hear our earnest prayers and intercede for us. Praise God!

Just talk to him like a good friend in the Lord, who knew suffering firsthand and is able to understand yours. Confide your hopes, your pain, your anxiety, your desire to follow God’s will, and any other honest thoughts that come to mind. Picture being at table over a cup of coffee, and share your suffocating burden for which you need the guidance of the Church. Hmmm, maybe that’s why you have no spiritual director? Who better than the Pope?

Listen to the thoughts that surface in your mind, perhaps something you had not considered before. Sometimes these arise in our mind at a time when we are least expecting counsel, so if you don’t seem to understand anything at that moment, trust that he is praying for you. Very often, I am guided at the moment of waking, while my mind is coming away from rest and not particularly thinking of anything special.

Just ask him to pray for whatever you need. I prayed that John Paul would intercede for a friend of mine who was dying–to give him and his wife strength to get through the ordeal.

This seems simple enough, and you’re right who better than him to be my spiritual director. I like the idea of just sitting across from him having a cup of coffee, he always seemed to be accessible like that. I know he was a strong advocate of the family which is why I would like to ask for his intercession and I’m glad the original poster posted this question.

This is going to be difficult for me since it seems like my mind doesn’t stop, and even my dreams are saturated with what I’m living. I would love to have a peaceful, restful nights sleep…I suspect it will be a long, long time before I get this again. Again, thank you Carole, you always seem to have a comforting word for me, thank you…I only hope to have your grace and ability to console someday :blessyou:

This is simple enough, I will try it, just talking to him isn’t difficult at all, thank you.

John Pail II’s cause for Canonization has official opened. All are encouraged to ask for his intercession. Here is the Offical website and Prayer, approved by the Vatican.

Cause for Canonization of John Paul II

**PRAYER FOR ASKING GRACES THROUGH THE INTERCESSION OF THE SERVANT OF GOD THE POPE JOHN PAUL II **

O Blessed Trinity
We thank You for having graced the Church
with Pope John Paul II
and for allowing the tenderness of your Fatherly care,
the glory of the cross of Christ,
and the splendor of the Holy Spirit,
to shine through him.
Trusting fully in Your infinite mercy
and in the maternal intercession of Mary,
he has given us a living image of Jesus the Good Shepherd,
and has shown us that holiness
is the necessary measure of ordinary Christian life
and is the way of achieving eternal communion with you.
Grant us, by his intercession, and according to Your will,
the graces we implore,
hoping that he will soon be numbered
among your saints.
Amen.

With ecclesiastical approval

It is more than OK…See above. His cause for Sainthood has been opened. He is called Servant of God, at this stage. We are encouraged by Rome to pray for his intercession.

Sir Knight:
Let us ALSO continue to pray FOR him as well.
I do every day…It was one of the things he asked us to do, several times before he died.

Pope B16 did open his cause in june (pulled a JPM, opening the cause before the 5 year mark, like JPM did for Mother Theresa)…
He is a sevant of God (meaning cause is open) and if any intersessions are answered, they should be reported.
