Is it OK to read these books? Not talking about Harry Potter!

The first one is Silence of the Lambs. It may be more gory than the movie.

The second one is The Hunt for Red October by Tom Clancy. There’s isn’t anything objectionable about this book, but I was just wondering if there’s anything immoral I missed.

SPOILER(?)

Third one: 1Q84 by Haruki Murakami. It has quite graphical sex scenes, including one gay one.

The fourth: The Bartimaeus Trilogy by Jonathan Stroud. It’s about magicians who summon djinns to help them. The djinns hate humans and wait for the chance to kill them. The book talks about the friendship between a boy and a fairly powerful and caring djinn.

Presumably you are an adult, since you are in college.
Therefore, your conscience should be able to tell you if a book is leading you personally into sin or not.
You can’t expect a bunch of strangers on the Internet to evaluate and police your reading matter.

Please speak to a priest about your scruples.

What I deem something to be a poorly handled sex scene, I skip it.

My anxiety levels get intolerable when something is too intense. I can pretty well avoid reading such works by reading the dustcover or Amazon blurbs. The fourth one looks interesting. The battle between good and evil is a universal theme. If you deem it appropriate to read Tolkien, then why not?

I’m only familiar with the first two. Read them if you want, I don’t really understand why you’re even asking. All the Hannibal Lecter stories are gory; if that bothers you, than don’t read them.

The answer is yes to literally any book ever written. If you do not feel comfortable with or just don’t like you don’t have to finish it but the idea of self censoring yourself as an adult can only lead to ignorance or fear of ideas. You’re an adult. You’re allowed to read what you like.

Hello.

What’s the nature of your hesitation in reading these books? I used to read a lot of true crime and murder mysteries and eventually found them depressing.

What you read has a profound effect on you, so do choose your material carefully.
