Is it ok to submerge a young baby into water?

Is it ok to submerge the baby when he is only three weeks old into water? I am new to the Greek rite and just wondering do they even submerge them that young?

We Christians have been doing it for 2000 years now, so I would say its just fine.

And that baby just came out of 9 months being submerged in water. 😃

I just had a friend from lebanon tell me they dont submerge them in the GC there and that they dont baptise them usually until 5 months old or later so thats why I asked. Because I think they submerge here in Dublin.

Infants have a natural reflex to hold their breath underwater. The worst submerging them will do is make them cry.

Yeah…but …even in the roman rite when they just splash the top of the babys head with water they still cry. I think my mam told me I did anyways. 😃
 
We don’t fully submerge the baby, at least in our parish. At the most, everything but the face is submerged. If you look at the youtube videos of St. Elias, one method they do is submerge the baby upright until the neck, then pour water on the head.

My son didn’t cry. And he seemed to respond rather positively to his baptism that even the priest was pleasantly surprised. He exclaimed, “Look! He’s as if acknowledging the grace of the Baptism”. My son was sick and has had tubes inserted to his stomach through his nostril and throat. Yet at baptism he opened his eyes and looked up into the heavens for a brief moment. This was almost exactly one year ago (March 24).

I’m becoming sentimental here 🙂

Time flies! I can’t believe your baby is due in only a couple of weeks! Very exciting. :bounce:

Brilliant and I am sorry to hear about your Son.

one year ago for you? my baby is expected on april 2nd - 4th. and is being baptised on Holy Pascha in Dublin by Archimandrite Fr.Serge. 😃

He said submersion is not a problem, just as long as the water is not too hot or cold. 🙂

be more than sentimental I love it, thank you for sharing you and your sons great story. It encourages me all the more.

I can still remember my younger cousin being placed in the small font and having water poured over her head. None of this bothered her, she actually seemed to think it was great. However when they took her out of the font she became extremely upset. 😃

Don’t be sorry. He’s doing well today and just celebrated his first birthday. Except for a nasty scar on his tummy, I doubt he’ll remember anything about that surgery. It was on the 24th of March, he was born on the 19th.

Although my son was baptized by pouring, since it was on a hospital bed, and by a traditional diocesan RC priest.

If you want to be sure, have mommy check the water temp before baptism. Moms have that instinct to know if the water is too hot or too cold.
